Why do we pray, “Hail Mary … blessed art thou amongst WOMEN”? Isn’t the Virgin Mary blessed amongst ALL - MEN AND women???

Also, in the Glory Be - why does the English translation say - “in the beginning” isn’t this theologically incorrect as there was no beginning for the Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - eternal???

Mary is the example which we should all strive to emulate, however the prayer goes “blessed art thou amongst women” or “benedícta tu in muliéribus”. Straight from Luke 1:28. The reason for this, I believe, is that when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary he was basically saying you are blessed among women for it is in your womb that christ will be conceived [and not in that of any other woman] (if you notice men don’t have wombs :p).

As for the Glory Be - I think that is refering to the Universe (“as it was in the beginning…now & forever…world without end”) and not the Trinity.

While it is true that Mary is blessed among all people, we’re quoting the Bible, saying exactly what St Elizabeth said to Mary in Luke’s Gospel, and she didn’t say ‘blessed are you among all people’ 🙂

As for the Glory Be - again, it is true that the members of the Trinity are all eternal beings, however there WAS a beginning point for all creatures and all of creation, and this is the ‘beginning’ referred to.

Glory is ordinarily something someone else gives to you, so your glory usually begins the moment someone else is there to start glorifying you 🙂
