First, as the OP, I want to thank you Don for your thoughtful responses both here and elsewhere I’ve read your feedback.
Second, I think some of the responses were a bit quick to make assumptions about my reason for asking the question. I simply was curious if it would “count” (whatever that may mean), not because I necessarily want to pursue head covering in general, or a wig in particular. Though I have covered in the past, and I am looking into it as a private devotional practice.
Finally, what I’m coming away with in regards to head covering for women, based both on the Corinthians scripture and Church tradition, is that part of the reason for a woman to cover is to maintain her dignity as a woman. I’m thinking here of St. Paul saying long hair on a man is a disgrace, and the inverse of that - I’m thinking - is short hair or uncovered hair on a woman being a disgrace. But then I read about “the olden times” of women feeling/being compelled to put any random thing on their heads - tissue, glove - for the sake of covering, and I think, where’s the dignity in that? That sounds like legalism and scupulosity, which I have been known to be prone to.
Anyway, what thinking about veiling is doing for me in my own walk with the Lord is to reassess my entire appearance, to try to be less tom-boyish and treat my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, which includes a feminine yet modest and well-groomed overall look, that may or may not include a head or hair covering of some sort.
There was a period in my life where I was contemplating Quakerism, as their testimony of simplicity appealed to me (one of the reasons). I think the long-term effects of this have left me down-right frumpy, fearing that any attention paid to my appearance would be vain.
Now that I’m back in full swing inside the Catholic church, I see those scrupules and extremes that I am prone to have distorted my view on the matter.
As to the original question of wigs serving as head coverings, what I’m gathering is that it depends on the purpose for which one would be donning a wig. And of course, as has been expresses here, the only good reason for taking up the practice would be if it brings us closer to the Lord.
