Does anyone happen to know how hairshirts are made? I just finished reading a book on the Carthusians and I’m curious to learn more about the nuts and bolts of it all. I know that hairshirts have been generally given up in favour of the cilice, but the Carthusians still use the old hairshirts. I’m curious to see how they look and feel so I can get a better sense of the Carthusian lifestyle. I’d like to see why the Carthusians are considered the most rigorous.

Anyone happen to know how they are made? I’d be willing to buy one if anyone happens to know where they’re sold. I know that some Carmelite monasteries sell penitential devices, but they only stick to cilices and disciplines. I asked them and they also just don’t make them anymore.

Thanks for the link. Weird, I’ve done websearches for hairshirts but I never saw that site before.

FYI though, if you’re looking for cilices, there’s an OCD monastery in Italy that makes them for much cheaper. The cilice-cross on that site that sells for $62 – if I can remember right, I spent, like, one-tenth of that price on a cilice from that OCD monastery. Plus, of course, the wonderful thing is that the money goes to benefit the nuns, so everybody wins. If anyone needs the address, I’d be happy to dig it up.
 
Once upon a time a monk wished to wear chains to mortify his flesh, so he went to visit a holy hermit to get his blessing to do so. The hermit said, “We’ll talk about it,” and set up refreshments.

While they were eating the hermit suddenly hit the visitor hard and knocked him off his chair. The monk stood up in great anger and asked, “What did you do that for?” amongst other choice words.

The hermit made a prostration to him and said, “Forgive me, brother, but if you can’t control you temper, what good will chains do you?”
