Haiti earthquake, God's wrath or natural phenomenon?

Haiti is 20% devout Catholic; rest is Voodoo…New Orleans had this as well…

The Ring of Fire is getting active again…and earthquakes in these times can come up anywhere any time…

The Northridge Quake outside of Los Angeles had its epi center, I heard, over the biggest porn store…correct me if I am wrong…but that is what I heard…

God allows even seemingly bad things to occur so that a greater good can be achieved. We know this even if we don’t like it.

It is beyond me to determine why Haiti has been struck with this calamity but I can say one thing for VERY SURE ~

The people (such as Pat Robertson) that say this calamity is the result of sin are CRAZY. No one in Haiti signed up for this. Anyone that says otherwise is NUTS.

Exactly!

Nobody chose this to happen…we should pity and help them.

Some day the earth will tremor where you are…where we all are…some day…

since I am not God I am not qualified to comment on the first alternative, so I will go with natural phenemonon for 1000, Aleck

I believe it had to do with plates on the Earth that slip once in a while.

Haiti is a troubled society with a lot of suffering though. Witchcraft cults are very active there. But I don’t think God would add to their suffering on purpose. It’s a coincidence.

I guess the point is we always need to pray to God for protection…

And if we aren’t preserved in this life does that mean that God disfavors us?
No, it means that God allows unfortunate things to occur to achieve a greater good. It is not always obvious to us what that “greater good” is, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’ occur.

Since you’re Catholic you should know that.

God can use the natural phenomenon at work within the confines of His will for His willm and greater good to be done on earth.

sometimes terrible things simply happen to people who do not deserve them. we all die. some of us will die in natural disaters, others may die of cancer, or die in our sleep at age 92.

Christ, when asked whether a series of disasters and cruel treatment had happened to certain people because of their sins replied “by no means! but unless you repent, you will likewise perish!” (Luke 13:1-5)

in other words, not every terrible thing is punishment for sin. but in Christ we are asked to extend our love and help to those who survive these disasters, and to remember that we too are subject to suffering and death, like everyone else. it is a powerful reminder to tell others about Christ, as none of us know how long we have, and as this life is very short.

  1. My question was rhetorical
  2. Tacking “Since you’re Catholic you should know that” on to your answer sounds like an uncharitable put down to me.

"god likes to kill people, but he leaves atheists and agnostics alone (I guess he likes smart people) " QUOTE by bridgeforsale
Well mr,“smart people”- you remind me as a “story” about an atheist who went to a Christian Russian village way out in the country–this smart person got up in the town square and said to the people “I am going to challenge your God(my capital letters!!) and curse Him for ten miniutes–see if He comes down and strikes me dead”-Well after his “time”- the atheist replied–“See you have all been duped–there is no God(again my capitals!) other wise I would have been dead by now”—the people relied " God did not kill you but we will " end of fable-

The moral to the story is ---- that in the end God will be the smart one and you will be dead-and since you refused to love, honour and serve God here on earth-there will be an everlasting Hell Fire awaiting you–not a “smart choice”.-repent and believe in The Gospel!

Are you really so shallow bridgeforsale(small letters) that you would use such suffering in Haiti to further your unbeliefs-your posting was rather flippant I thought-perhaps it reflects your aetheistic hard heart!

Lord,I believe,help my unbelief.

Thank you Sam777 for your comments.

Why not unleash an earthquake in Saudi Arabia where the wealth is? Not that I wish that on anyone…God has his own ways of dealing with the non-believers and cess pools out there.
But Saudi Arabia is the most devoted Islamic country in the Islamic world, the country which hosts the two holiest Islamic cities (Mecca & Madinah), so how do you expect God to punish them 🤷.

Thanks for pointing that Biblical verse. 🙂

I think that Muslim cleric was high on crack. What happened in Haiti is not God’s wrath nor God’s will. It is simply nature’s work. Why would God allow such thing? It’s because it he can if he wants to. Now the question is out of those 100,000 victims that you mentioned, how many of them believe in GOD?

Yup I’m that shallow

I never want God to punish anyone, but Islam is not of Jesus Christ. Just saying a wealthy country verses the poorest of the poor.

It wasn’t meant as a put down, but a reminder. But you’ll take it as you choose to I suppose.

I said earlier regarding the events in Haiti that we never know the day the Lord will take us and we should always be ready irregardless of the circumstances.

It seems to me that you’ve found a better reason to doubt the cleric than to doubt God, my friend.

I do not know what or who caused the earthquake in Haiti, or the Asian Tsunami. To me this is not so important. I know of many clerics (in Islam and Christianity alike) who make a big name for themselves pretending to be God’s official spokesperson. This is can be dangerous, so I don’t listen to such people. It is more important to see God at work moving the hearts of the people who are working to rescue the injured and poor. People die as some clerics all over the world say “Good! They deserved it!” instead of saying “What a terrible loss of the gift of life! Who knows what great saints we may have lost today!”

I prefer the second reaction, because it reminds me of our common humanity and the responsibility we have to serve God while we can. The first reaction just seems like spiritual boastfulness and pride, of the type that the Bible warns us against. It is likely that your cleric does not know this verse from Proverbs (16:18): “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”.

قَبْلَ الانْكِسَارِ الْكِبْرِيَاءُ، وَقَبْلَ السُّقُوطِ غَطْرَسَةُ الرُّوحِ
If this were used: youtube.com/watch?v=BR6O3kJTqaI
Would it be not so important then?

I’m not sure what you mean? If some scientist created the earthquake, would it not be important that they had done that? Wow…that’s pretty out there. Of course it would be important (because then it would be criminal misconduct, not a “natural” disaster), but there’s no evidence that this is what has happened.

OK, I was just wondering since you said it was not important how it happened & put out there that our gov owns a very dangerous weapon.
