Haley Barbour Tells Pro-Life Republicans to Ditch Social Issues in 2010 Elections

Washington, DC – Haley Barbour is the latest potential Republican presidential candidate to suggest that social issues like abortion should be taken off the table while making the economy the main focus. Despite the fact that polls show Americans strongly oppose the pro-abortion health care law, Barbour says fiscal issues should take priority.

Looks like I’m voting Independent this year . . . :compcoff:

He just committed political hari kari with a sword of his own making.

Well, he’s off my Christmas card list!

I’m getting snail mail from pro-life organizations listing all of the people running and showing that the incumbents are all pro-abortion/ pro-“choice” and many of the challenging / “citizen politicians” are pro-life.

And the best positioned challengers are almost ALL pro-life.

So, what is with the Republican establishment all of a sudden being so embarrased at the pro-life candidates!!!

If they take abortion off the table, that will be the last stupid move the Pubs make, 'cause EVERYONE will stay home, and it will be '06 all over—only far worse.

What good is a right to liberty or a right to the pursuit of happiness without the right to life?

I think I will wait and see who is nominated and what they have to offer. Haley Barbour is not yet a candidate. In fact, no one has announced in the GOP as yet.

I guess he’s capitulating to the Gods of Pragmatism and “Winning Comes First!”

Too bad. I agree that he will be comitting political suicide for some if he persists in advancing this at election time.

The sad thing is I was satisfied how he handled the state of Mississipi when Katrina and Rita rolled around.

Hmm. :hmmm:
By “taken off the table” does he mean that we shouldn’t make a big deal about a pro-life candidate being pro-life so that the politcal debate will be focussed on the economy and some people who are pro-choice will be comfortable voting for the pro-life candidates, OR does he mean we should shut up and not question anyone even if pro-aborts try taking over the Republican party?

The article says Barbour’s strongly pro-life with a strong pro-life voting record. I want strong pro-life leaders elected. I’m more interested in what they do about abortion once they are elected than what they talk when they’re running for office. Talk is cheap. However, they can’t hide their views on abortion or hold pro-choice views and then expect pro-lifers to vote for them just because there’s an “R” by their name.

👍

Expressly the first. The issue of the day that could drastically shift the balance of power in Congress is, to quote a former president “…the economy, stupid”. Pro-lifers should still run, but should not make an issue out of something that will divide the conservative base (until they are in office, of course).

The remarks are being blown out of proportion to divide the fiscal conservative vote, the worst possible outcome at the moment.

A True Republican showing his colors: not really pro-life but pro-winning at all costs. This is why I do not trust ANY Republican for ANY reason. End of line.

I have personally know Haley Barbour for many years and he is staunchly pro-life. I think the thing here is not to allow the Dems to make this the primary issue. He has made no effort to hide his pro-life stance whenever the issue arises and as you say, he has a strong pro-life voting record. Why wave a red flag in front of a bull if you don’t have to.

He’s not telling everyone to become pro-abortion, just not to shout that one is pro-life from the rooftops. I don’t know how useful it would be either way, though - the GOP is on a roll, O’Donnell or no. Sometimes silence can be a virtue, too, right?

In what way?

No one should be silent about the horrors of abortion. Cowardly politicos and pundits who refuse to vote their conscience are about to get a history lesson.

Please keep in mind that I am anti-abortion, and my comments are in no way shape or manner any endorsement of abortion…merely political analysis.

Barbour is merely telling them what they should already be aware of politically. Many promises were made vis a vis the Rove gameplan that were not kept, thus ringing the same bell again would be disingenuous and could cost them even more votes than ignoring the issue on its face.

You mean like the current regime’s campaign ‘promises?’ 😃

Um, the issue is getting elected. Some of those saying we shouldn’t necessarily try a hard sell on abortion (when the election would otherwise be decided on the economy) are among the most pro-life in Congress.

Lifesite (among others) is performing hatchet jobs on their own best hopes, and Planned Parenthood, I’m sure, is loving it.
