I’m curious what Mormons have to say about this.

Warren Jeffs is more like Joseph Smith than anyone who is heading the LDS church.

Seriously, it looks to me like the local authorities were just waiting for someone in that group to make the slightest hint of a wrong move.

If the FLDS would abandon their disgusting practice of marrying off young teenaged girls to their much older uncles and cousins, and change over to only allowing women over 18 to marry, I think public opinion would be more with them than against them. But as it is, very few people in modern America will condone what is basically ritualized/institutionalized child abuse in the name of God. I think most of us rightly see it as an abuse of our guaranteed freedoms of religion.

I feel worried for the kids in this situation, because they have been raised in what amounts to a fantasy world, and at least some of them will probably wind up in foster homes which may or may not be healthier environments, and even in the best case, will be a shock to them. I will be praying for these children.

i hope this will shine a light on the truth about polygamy, which is about subjugation of women, especailly the undereducated, less physically “pretty” women who fall prey to such a religion as Joseph Smith designed.

these religionists seem to try to present polygamy as something that is beneficial to society, besides being a command of God. it reminds me of some promoters of legalized prostitution, who work to put a decent face on that scheme, as if it serves needs of society. i can’t say there is a direct connection between the two practices, but it sure seems like there is a nexus at the point of a carnal man’s desire to have sex relations with many women.

that’s another thing that mystifies me. why they chose Texas. I have family there and often travel thru that area, it is thick with evangelicals and fundamentalists who have no love of of the mormon religion, especially not this particilar brand of mormon.

There is a lot of news coverage of this in Utah. Texas is removing girls, boys and women, and questioning them. It started with one girl, who made a phone call for help, saying that she was being abused. The State authorities are systematically interviewing everyone, trying to find this girl.

The really sad thing is, these people are taught from the day they are born that governments are out to get them, and that they only have safety in their insular community. Over the weekend, law enforcement searched the inside of their temple, which is horrifying to these people. This whole incidence may only enforce the belief of persecution, government mistrust, and fear of the “outside”. It gives fuel to the male patriarchy, as something for them to use to build tighter control.

Utah and Arizona used to look the other way, re: polygamy and its practices of abuse. Within the last two decades or so, both states have sought prosecutions for child abuse and fraud. So, the polygamist setup a new compound in Texas. Most likely hiding assets, and people. They look for areas that are isolated and rural, and hope that the locals ignore them as just an odd bunch of people.

They are not a law-abiding bunch. They believe that their prophet has a higher law, and that State and Federal laws are an intrusion on their beliefs. Meanwhile, they marry off young girls to older men and defraud the states and federal governments of money in various ways.

The young girls are taught from the day they are born that this is their purpose in life. To be a polygamist wife, obey their husband as their god, and have lots of babies.

The older men look for favor with the leaders, so they can be assigned a fresh, young girl as a wife. The boys, who have no power and are seen as nothing but competition for the girls, are run off.

A dear friend of mine is in a polygamy video on youtube. She escaped the Kingston clan in Salt Lake City. This is a very well done documentary of those who have escaped polygamy and lived to tell their story.

Unfortunately for many polygamists as well as ex-Mormons, never come to know Jesus. They have a hard time looking past Mormonism and seeing that there IS a God and His name is Jesus.

In the past, polygamy is a gift of God:

2 Samuel 12:7-8

Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I anointed thee king over Israel… And gave thee thy master’s house and thy master’s wives into thy bosom

But sexual abuse, rape, and incest is NOT a gift from God. Polygamy is the least of the problems going on at that compound. I pray that these young women are able to heal and lead normal lives once they have been removed, hopefully permanently, from that environment.

God warned men, particularly kings, against multiple marriage, but allowed it when it made it possible for widows to survive and feed their children. Jesus clarified God’s will for marriage when he defined it as two becoming one, cleaved together.
