Halloween or Holloween?

As a Southern Baptist my church had a “christian alternative” halloween party which I will refer to as a holloween. Instead of dressing up like ghost and goblins and so forth we dressed in “christian appropriate costumes” and had a carnival at church for our safety vs of walking through our dark neighborhoods.

How should we combat this anti halloween talk by many of our southern baptist friends and other fundamental protestants? Should we shrug it off or educate?

I now know a Catholic, that the early church martyers were having a festival prior to all souls day, they dressed up like ghost, demons, witches, and dead martyers because they knew when they died that they knew where they were going (purgatory, heaven) and they were having fun, enjoying life…

So maybe we should too, have fun, dress up, celebrate, enjoy life.
 
It’s Halloween–taken to mean, literally, All Hallow’s Eve, or the eve before All Saints’ Day. It wouldn’t make much sense if it’s made into Holloween.
 
In Elizabethan English the word “evening” could be contracted to “e’en”. So the eve of All Hallows Day was All Hallows Evening, or colloquially, Hallows e’en.

Calling it “holloween” would leave it kinda hollow, right?

Ok, that was stupid!
 
i’ve never understood the problem people have with
halloween… and i was raised baptist… lol

While Hallow takes us to halo and saints, Hollow takes us to the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.😦

This is really good information. Our church has always participated in Halloween, we’ve always had a carnival. Somehow we never had a good explanation for why it’s ok to participate and we were always left to explain it to our kids in a way that is true to the church teachings.

what about the trick-or-treating?

is that concidered “devil worshipping”
some people believe that because the 1st is all saints day then the day before must be the devils day, and halloween is ‘devil worshipping’

but what is the belief on trick-or-treat? was halloween commercialised like a lot of other catholic traditions? :eek:

what can our reply be to such arguments?

I think the first article was a bit over the top when it came to promoting violence, sure halloween in their view is bad, but must they really come up with every argument they can possibly think of?
it must be 1 in a billion kids that chose to attempt killing someone on halloween, and its not halloween itself in my opinion that goes around telling people to go kill and worship the devil.
as long as people know the true meaning of Halloween then it shouldn’t be viewed as a devils day.

It’s called judging something based on the abuses that have crept into it; throwing the baby out with the bath water; there are probably other cliches but I can’t think of them right now.

There are some very Catholic things that can be done on the vigil besides having fun. A chance to teach our children about the reality and dangers of the devil and Hell - Hell is a dogma, Death is a punishment for Original Sin. Our Lady of Fatima showed Hell to the Fatima children - there was no harm done because they had hope for Heaven. We need to repent of our own sins (Hell reminds us what will happen if we don’t - Oct 31), ask help in our lives (the Saints assist with this - Nov 1), and then act. Love of neighbor is the greatest form of charity and we are supposed to help those who can least help themselves (the Poor Souls - Nov 2).

I have a devils costume, was told by someone that it was devil worshipping to dress up as a devil :eek:
