Halloween store

Hi, I just need to blow off some steam…I was at a new Halloween store in a shopping plaza nearby. My daughters were invited to a masquarade party and wanted a white wig. I was appalled in this very large store, most of the costumes for adults and teens were extremely lewd. Everyone for women was a sexy version of the character they were pretending to be, witch, doctor, nurse, secretary, etc. What really upset me though was display of 3 nuns costumes, one was “regular” one was a “sexy nun” with short habit and one called, “Thank you Father” with a pregnant nun!! It had an inflatable ball to put under the garment. I know I’m “old” at 49, but I find that gross, not funny. I know not everyone is Catholic, but still, I left without anything. There wasn’t a real manager there and saying anything would probably have fell on deaf ears. But maybe I will upon reflection.
I never see them make fun of rabbis (thankfully) but they wouldn’t stay silient I bet.
Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

me sympatico.

we never go in those places. my little kids are terrified and my older kids scandalized.

we do trick or treat stuff, but we do without the halloween store.
 
I don’t get it either. Stick with a local chain store…usually their costumes are pretty benign…but all costumes have a price tag.
 
I don’t know what’s more depressing . . .the fact that these huge “Spirit of Hallowe’en” stores get bigger and more disgusting every year. . .and are around longer and longer. . .or the fact that the other mall stores have already started putting out the Christmas stock. Come ON, people. It isn’t even officially FALL yet!
 
Yeah, it’s really appalling.

But this thread brought one cool memory to mind-- last year I was at a party supply store getting ready for multiple October birthdays in our house. I blew through the costume aisle really quickly because somebody needed something-- a sword? a hat? I forget.

Anyway, there was a youngish girl, maybe 8, showing her dad a costume. It was in her size, but it was too immodest for any age, much less a young girl. I cringed, sure that the dad was going to say, “Sure, sweetie, whatever you want,” but instead he launched into protective Papa Bear mode, and said, “No way are you getting anything like that! That’s not decent!”

I didn’t say anything-- didn’t want the guy to think I was a nut-- but I was cheering for him inside… :clapping:

As far as Christmas stock, I’ve worked in retail almost twenty years now. Stores stock it early because people buy it early. If it wasn’t cost effective they wouldn’t do it. Our Halloween stuff is already picked over and Thanksgiving/Harvest stuff is flying off the shelves.
The same customers that complain as they walk in about Christmas stuff being out already are the ones in my line with a cart full of Christmas decorations on their way out. Retail stores are in business to make a profit and they only make it if people buy it - and trust me they do.
 
mm…wow, that definately reminds me of mean girls!! Where, Regina and her 2 friends rock up to the halloween party as supposed ‘sexy’ bunnies. mmm…i dont celebrate halloween and i dont usually see trick or treaters come in those type of costumes.
but the nun thing - I think thats crossing boundaries! and i understand what you mean - that no other faith gets attacked as much as the catholic one! I mean, iv neva seen a costume made to attack of muslim or a buddhist.
 
I do not like to see any faith being mocked in any way.
When I become a catholic, I think halloween will be a time I can actually look at as an opportunity to consider all the saints on earth, (per the bible) and all the saints in heaven (also per the bible) that I have not spent enough time considering in any depth.

I do remember a few years ago, a young boy coming to the door trick-or-treating dressed like a pope. He was the only one that said thank you to me in the group of ten or eleven kids that were at the door at once. 🙂

Maybe one day he really will be pope.
 
I don’t think there’s anything wrong as dressing up as a religious for Halloween if done tactfully (in other words, the nice costume and NOT the skanky ones).

I actually remember dressing as St. Therese one year for Halloween when I was taking my younger siblings and cousins around the neighborhood.

And it’s always nice to hear kids say please and thank you :).

So many parents don’t stress it these days, and that’s sad. 😦

notsmart, you don’t have to wait until you are Catholic to do this! Go ahead and start looking up the Saints who have been Canonized and those who are Beatified (check out the difference, I bet there is something here on CA about that!)

Yes, children who are taught to respect all tend toward the more benign costumes but there are also those who get caught up in the moment and forget their manners ;). You have no idea how many children I have encountered who have very quietly said “Thank You” and because they were facing me their parents didn’t hear so they prompted with “did you say…” I smile and let the parents know that they indeed did say “thank you”.

I have no problem with scary costumes to a degree because for some children it is a way to work through a fear but nothing justifies a pregnant Nun.

If you have the courage, you should go tell those people at the costume store that both the sexy nun and the pregnant nun are offensive to a large portion of the world they just don’t have the courage to say anything! Of course, if they tell you that they sell well then you can point out that they will sell whether there is a display or not so please take the display down!

Maybe I will say something, I wont though if the manager isn’t there, but I’m sure the teens have to supervised part of the day.

My daughters want to be a 50’s girl,gypsy or someone from Shakespere for the party. That shouldn’t be too hard with my limited sewing skills.😛

I"m tired some days of people insinuating my girls are “weird” or odd because they are “just 16” and don’t wear makeup, like some modesty and don’t like offensive costumes or dress. I know they have friends like themselves and they are “typical teens” in a lot of ways. Geez, if you don’t like porn, dressing like a teen star or acting like your way over your age, you’re odd? It’s so hard to them today, even more than when I was 16, but I pray to St Joseph for them everyday and pray that they along with their peers make good choices.

I was like your girls when I was in high school (just a few years ago, I’m not that old lol) and I was labeled as a goody goody and treated like I was 5. It was very annoying. When I was a Senior in high school the Freshmen treated me like I was their baby sister or something. It irritated me to no end. I don’t understand why people are like that…

But I bet at the 10 year reunion, when everyone matures a bit, you will be remembered and regarded with respect as opposed to the girls who were hanging out of their shirts and pants and were “popular” for all the wrong reasons. It’s a wonderful gift to yourself to never be in the position of having to dig out of the hole of a bad reputation!!
