I Therefore, we can laugh at death and laugh at the devil cuz he cannot get us!
That does not sound patristic. Some of the greatest saints and ascetics were not so filled with ego that they felt they could “laugh” at the the devil. These were monks and saints who dedicated their entire lives to asceticism. St Anthony the Great was beaten to a pulp and almost killed by the demons in his cave.

Be watchful.

Sometimes, when someone complains that you’re being a partypooper, it is because you’re being a partypooper.
Of course, if you wouild like to call names…that is okay. But I will always speak against demonic halloween.
That would be rash judgement, which is a sin.
It is not a sin to condemn a demonic festival which is celebrated under the guise of “harmless fun.”
Be very very careful how you word your warnings, then, lest you who would save others fall yourself.
I can save nobody. Only Christ can save. I am the worst of sinners. That is why it is important to be watchful and receive holy confession and holy communion often.

Hey, it’s like Christmas for me. I don’t get to share gifts with kids now that they are mostly grown ups in the family now.

I like seeing kids eyes light up with wonder and delight.

I don’t have the joy of seeing people get together often.

Kids are so full of life, and as I get older and see less life around me I find myself wanting to do whatever I can to help them keep shining.
StrawberryJam, this is a beautiful post. I think you are doing a great thing. You have a very kind heart. 🙂

I love to decorate my front door area (nothing too scary) and see kids come up to the house all excited and hopeful. Was thinking last night how I will probably still do the same in a couple of years when my last child gives up trick or treating. I look at it as paying it back too, for all the candy and memories I happily collected as a child. 👍

I was watchful!
I was watchful my dog and cat did not sneak out.
I was watchful that each trick or treater got a treat in their bag.
I was watchful to compliment the kids in their costumes.
I was watchful to greet the moms and dads who brought their cuties out to trick or treat.
I was watchful to put my tombstones away at the end of the evening so they can be reused next year.

There was no devil out in our neighborhood last night. Instead, we had fabulous, appreciative groups of kids with their parents who were cute, handsome, adorable, and by 8 pm, tired! It was a fun evening in our neighborhood.

Why so much fear?

I don’t find my Faith boring, in fact, is a source of happiness to me.

Religion permeates every aspect of our lives.

One cannot have a religious life and then another life which contradicts the former.

Blessings!

🙂

'The Devil, the proud spirit, cannot endure to be mocked."*

Thomas More is not of the patristic consensus. He is16th century post schism.

Saint Michael rebuked Satan. He did not mock him.

Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.
1Peter 5:8

No fear…only joy and prayer. 🙂
I have joy too! 😃 And I pray! 😉

And I loved Halloween last night! 👍

No fear here! 😃

The numbers were down this year where I live. I think we were spoiled with Halloween falling on the weekend the last few years. But the level of friendliness and politeness has been increasing steadily. 👍 Not that we ever had hooligans but they used to be more interested in moving on to the next house. Last night, the kids really wanted to talk about their costumes, the parents were smiling and waving from the curb and everyone was having a very good time.

You don’t want to hear from St. Thomas because he was “16th Century post-schism”?

So was the Council of Trent. Your standards are a bit beyond us, I’m thinking.

Just going to add my personal opinion: I think Halloween is awesome. It’s fun for kids, and older people too, and I really don’t see why there’s all this concern about it.

If anyone wants to look at an adorable little three-year-old dressed like a puppy and start obsessing over the work of the Devil, then that’s their own problem. 🤷

I don’t doubt that Satan is everywhere; my difference with Mickey is that the devil doesn’t use the same tactics with everyone.

My point was that there aren’t any written works about children’s festivals or even popular festivals in any writings that Mickey is going to recognize or at least not any except those pointing to an excess. The Desert Fathers were undeniably holy, but they didn’t write about the spiritual lives of children! They went into the desert specifically to do combat with the devil by a life of severe penances and self-denial, and so of course their writings are going to be from that perspective.

The way the devil attacks someone called to difficult aesthetic practices will be different than the way the devil would approach different “prey.” You don’t insulate a child from the devil by teaching her to see the devil in everything. You don’t keep her from evil by teaching her that it is dangerous to use her imagination or to have fun.

I’m not saying that Halloween, with its emphasis on death, the other-worldy, and unseen powers that can cause fear, doesn’t need to have a warning that cautions against lures towards the occult. That is a reasonable warning!

Still, a person who condemns carving and lighting up pumpkins and hanging bats and cobwebs because these things pose some threat to holiness can unknowingly misrepresent what holiness is. That is a real spiritual danger, too! There are millions of people who reject religion because they think that holiness and enjoyment of the pleasures of this world are mutually exclusive. That is a lie that the devil uses to drive a wedge between us and the love of God, too.

This lie even puts a wedge into the lives of many Christians, such that they have religion and holiness in one compartment and enjoyment of the pleasures God ordained for us to have in another. If we start putting God in one box and the good things of life in another, that inevitably takes our gratitude for these blessings away from our enjoyment of them. We start looking at enjoyment itself as a sin, and therefore think that avoiding sin isn’t even a realistic goal for a “normal person.”

I understand that Mickey has some legitimate points. I think the blanket condemnation of all of Halloween, though, is a mistake. It is right to tell others what is forbidden. It is not right to forbid what is allowed; that tactic, because it is not fully based on the truth, can actually play into the devil’s hand.

We desperately need to have a thread on Catholicism and “fun”, because it’s an ongoing subject that we haven’t tackled head on. Personally, I’m tempted to agree with you.
I agree. One day, after reading many threads on here, I asked my husband if he thought that Catholics were allowed to have fun. One begins to wonder after the attitude some people have. Not that life is suppose to be about having fun all the time, but geesh somedays I feel like we are not meant to enjoy this life at all!

OK, I’ll start one!

I TOTALLY agree with you. It’s so sad how many killjoys there are out there. Catholics can’t have fun-and even things that are harmless fun, grumpy people out there are the first ones to throw darts in your balloon. It’s sad people get there kicks from doing this.

I ignore them, and enjoy my life and fun regardless of what they say.

This also reminds me of the preaching we get about modern music - that anything other than Gregorian chant is from the Devil and will pollute our minds.

I had half a mind to throw on some Black Sabbath as I passed out Halloween candy last night…figured Mickey’s head might spin around just thinking of it!

LOL

I personally love music with driving beats! and some techno music. Now my son has introduced me to DubStep…I kind of like it!😛

My sons’ friends are used to me now, but the first few times new kids come over and they hear what I listen to, they are surprised!! Not many 40-something moms listen to what I do!😃

Do you know deadmau5?

Moar Ghosts N Stuff

I don’t like dubstep but trance is very nice.

Ferry Corsten

It’s something my 18 year old electro-wizard son and I can share. I like most of what he listens to, including this song.

Lights - Up Up and Away

and i am 54…chronologically…
