Hi everyone, a few people have added me as a friend and I’m pretty new to the works of the forum but I have click “accept” and saved changes so God-willing it has worked.

Earlier in the year I lost a friend of mine. A young man of 23 dropped dead out of the blue.

Anyway, I had a tattoo of a peace dove done on my hand, really in memory of him.

Is this wrong? Will I still be accepted into the church?

Many thanks

The Catholic Church has no prohibitions against tattoos so don’t be concerned about it. I would only be concerned if it was something obscene or sacraligious.

There’s a deacon at a predominate church that I visit (home of Cardinal Roger Mahony) who has tattoos all over his arms. I would never get a tattoo myself, but I would never judge anyone who does.

Hi LoveMorrissey-

I will be 50 in April and I have three tattoos myself. The first one I ever got was in memory of my mother…plumeria flowers on my calf. (I was 45 at the time.) Since then, I have added a cross on my back and a flowering vine up my left arm from elbow to shoulder. Thankfully, the Church doesn’t look askance on tattoos in general, as long as they aren’t obscene.🙂

All the other answers are great but I would like to add something. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, so any tattoos, ear pricing, body pricing etc. are marking up this temple. The church doesn’t have any rule against it (unless it’s sacrilegious of course), but they certainly don’t encourage it.

God Bless.

The Lord looks at our hearts and soul, not our outward bodies. But tattoos could be a sign of vanity with some folks…NOT to be confused with friends here that got tattooed in rememberance of loved ones… But the money being used for new tattoos could be given to homeless funds or charities instead…just sayin!

The Old Testament Leviticus 19 : 28 …“do not put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.”

I have to ask, why do people bother with this? Can you not remember him without scarring your body for life and thereafter? Et expecto reserectionem morturom; I personally won’t be resurrected with any such marks on my skin if I can help it.

I think this is one of my biggest “pet-peeves”, using Leviticus to tell people what they can/can’t do. If we are going to follow those “laws” it must be all of them, so no shellfish or blended fiber clothing either, among other things.

Blending fibers should at least be sinful if they contain polyester. 😛

There will be no such markings on your skin no matter what you do.

Decay and resurrection will take care of that.

You will have a new skin! 🙂

PS, for what it’s worth, I myself do not care for tattoos.

Wow I sure spelled my Latin poorly up there. Anyways wasn’t Christ resurrected with His wounds visible? Tattoos are wounds after all.

I have various pockmarks on my skin that I hope will not go into Life Everlasting with me!

Our LORD kept the traces of His wounds so that His friends could “identify His (live) body.” We can’t assume from that that everybody will retain the damage of an old body on a new one! IMNAAHO.

I had a mastectomy about 5 years ago and have been talking about possibly having the scar tattooed. Well, for Christmas my husband gave me a gift certificate to have one done. Most unusual gift I’ve ever received.

Personally, I find nothing attractive about tattoos. But am okay with them if done in minimalistic form. Just my personal opinion on them.

I’m kind of amused when the topic comes up (not referring to here) and someone starts arguing that it’s pagan. Especially if that someone also wears make up and has pierced ears.

Sorry about that, you can take it up with the author of Leviticus. 😉

The exact same passage also forbids cutting your beard.

To the OP: Tattooing is certainly a topic that arouses heated debate on the forums here. However there is nothing in church teaching that explicitly forbids tattoos. So sit back and enjoy the popcorn and remember that internet people’s opinions are just that. 🍿

Everyone, God Bless and thank you for taking the time to reply.

I will speak to Father before Mass tomorrow night just to check that he is okay with it. I guess the way I see it, it’s a memorial tattoo and a Peace Dove, it’s not satanic.
