This is a beautiful way to depict a holy gesture that one believes should be reserved only for the priests as they offer the prayers of the faithful to the Lord! Thanks for this show of respect! Much better than that improper use by those terrible praying folk who show up at Mass with an agenda of calling attention to themselves.

😦

Look buddy…that picture is in no way directed towards one of God’s Priest whom the Orans Posture is reserved for. I have nothing but the utmost respect, love, and appreciation for them. THat picture is directed to those who feel it is necessary to try to mimic the Priest by holding their hands up during the “Our Father”…and do so incorrectly…especially at the conclusion of the “Our Father”…it seems as if they are signaling a touchdown has taken place.

What would we do without our favorite Graphics Master?

There are many things the priest does in the liturgy that are also done by the people–folded hands, sign of the cross, beating of breast, etc. When it is something that is specific to only the priest, there are documents spelling that out. It is clear that at Mass only the priest (or deacon) can do the gospel and homily, or the blessings, or the consecration, etc, etc.

Show me something that says it is NOT ok (that isn’t just someone’s opinion), after all of the many, many complaints and letters.

The fact that it is encouraged or mandated in some dioceses says it CANNOT be forbidden or it could not be so encouraged or mandated.

As you yourself have said on many occasions, and we have all acknowledged, it is up to the Bishop with jurisdiction. That in and of itself should make it a non-issue. It’s not our decision to make. Our decision is whether we act charitably toward each other, whatever sign of devotion we might choose.

Peace,
Haven’t seen beating of the breast exceot at Traditional masses in years. Are there still places where it is done?

I see it with individuals, although I’ve not seen anywhere where it’s widely practiced. there may very well be parishes or dioceses it where it is the rule rather than the exception; I just don’t know.

I find it interesting that no one from either “side” (and I hate acknowledging that “sides” exist!) complains about it here since to the best of my knowledge it is also no longer in the GIRM (except possibly for the priest), so under many of the arguments made here, it would be an “innovation”–its past history notwithstanding. I don’t subscribe to that opinion as I see it as a meaningful gesture and fully understand one’s desire to use it.

Peace,

God has definitely blessed my family… He must love them very much… considering all the crosses He blesses us with! !👍

My sons might not agree… especially when I was explicit in what their punishment might be for their indiscretions… they would say “You don’t have to be so graphic, master.” (sorry)

Does the orante position have the arms bent at the elbow, palms almost facing each other, thumbs up?

Can anyone tell me when congregations started using this posture during the “Our Father”? And most importantly, WHY?

Steve
I was told because of the “old way” back in Jesus’ time… but it would take a bunch of convincing. As a family we used to hold hands but now we just have our hands folded in prayer. I cannot stand the other… but I don’t know why except for sake of “unity”… I will keep reading though

Many of my favorite people, as seen in my real world as well as here on CA, have a difference of opinion on the Orans Posture. Holy holy people indeed are found on either side of the coin. I think we need to be careful not to berate those who, in utmost sincerity, are following what they believe to be correct. I think, the problem lies in poor instruction and not in the faithful who believe they are doing the right thing based on what they have been instructed to do.

Peace!
