Hanging on to Christmas a little longer?

I find it so sad to see people taking everything down. We usually keep everything up till well into Jan. But unfortunately this year we will be taking things down early. We actually took the tree down today because it was too dry and a fire hazard. And then on Sunday, I will be leaving town for 3 weeks so we will be taking down the big stuff outside. It really is kinda of sad.

I get annoyed that the popular culture “turns off” Christmas at noon on Dec.25. And it can be easy to get pulled into that “life as usual” mode. But I like the fact that I am free to make the actual Christmas season a religious one, rather than just more fluff about jingling, reindeer, and jolly-ness. In fact, all the family getting together tends to stifle the religious aspect of Christmas for me, so I enjoy things quieting down.

I have several CD’s of Christmas music which I save for now. We wear our Christmas best to Church throughout the Christmas season. We have a Christmas Candle on our table that we light at supper each night saying “Jesus Christ is the Light of the World - Glory to God in the Highest!” (and since the kids are still young and cooperative, we sing the “Gloria” part of Angels We Have Heard on High along with the lighting). On Epiphany (Jan 6, not the closest Sunday) we do a special house blessing with the story of the wise men, singing, and chalk on the doorways, and we give 3 family gifts to the kids on Epiphany, one for each wise man. The wise men in our 2 main nativity scenes reach their destination on Jan 6, and not before. And the tree (and other decorations) definitely doesn’t come down until then or later.

So on that note, Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Morwenna and to everybody on the thread!

Yes I love to hang onto the Christmas Spirit and all the continued things going on at Mass. I am fortunate to have a DH that loves for it all to go on to, even though he is not Catholic. I love that Catholic culture site and here is another with the Canon - D music my friend sent me for the New Year by the way happy and Blessed and Holy New Year to all.

biblesociety.ca/free_scriptures/escriptures/ecclesiastes3/ecclesiastes3.html

Read it out loud when listening to it it is very moving.

🙂 👍
