Hanging Rosaries in cars?

I see a lot of people hanging Rosaries in cars. Is this ok? Does it matter if the Rosary has not been blessed?

As long as there is no law against hanging things in your car, where you live, it’s fine. I have one in my car - it reminds me to practice charity when I am driving. On long trips, my passengers often use it to pray with, as well, to pass the time.

I hang my rosary on my rear-view mirror, because I like to pray it, or a Divine Mercy Chaplet while I drive, and so after I’m done praying I’ll hang it back up so that it’s there the next time I want to pray it.
I don’t see why it would be worse than hanging it on your wall, or laying in on a dresser, or putting it in a drawer.

Are you correlating hanging a rosary in your car to people who wear them while committing crimes? Or just asking about it?

I am very distracted by things hanging from the rear view mirror, so I wouldn’t do it. I think as a simple reminder a medal or something similar attached to the dashboard would be enough. My dh keeps a rosary (in a case) in his car, I usually have mine in my purse when I leave the house. Holding the actual beads and driving is also distracting, so I usually just use my fingers to keep track, or pray with a CD.

Who knows what they are thinking. Only they can answer that.

But there is a big difference between wearing a Rosary as some type of talisman or supersticious device and hanging a Rosary in your car as a place to keep it, a visible reminder, or a sign of your religion.

I like rosaries hanging in cars but I often wonder what the purpose is. I think it is a way for Catholics to show each other that they are Catholic. I like being in the parking lot at a grocery store and seeing all the Catholic vehicles parked. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

As for the gangs and musicians etc… who wear the rosaries around their necks… what is that? Totally misconsquewed (sp). Do they even know how to pray?

Nicole Richie has a rosary tatoo on her foot… what is up with that?

I hang one from my rearview mirror; to remind myself to pray often and everywhere, and also so other people can know I am Catholic and believe in praying the rosary. I don’t think you HAVE to do it to be a good Catholic, however.
My car rosary is small with only a Decade of beads and a cross.

Hi Brett,

Yes, I think it is ok as long as your intention is to keep it as a reminder of our faith and to be used to pray when you can—and not as some sort of a good luck charm for safe travel. If you find a full rosary too distracting, then you can always purchase a car rosary as another poster has described. We have one, it is only one decade and much less distracting for me personally.
My sons like to look for Catholic cars when we are out and about–its just a good reminder that we aren’t alone.
And…if I am involved in a serious accident, then I pray that my last image on earth will be the crucifix hanging from my mirror.

It is always a good idea to get your religious objects blessed by a priest–I sort of think of it as extra ooomph

I don’t like it. Its seems impratical. When making turns it swings around. Do the folks that have them dangling actually say the rosary as its up there or do they take them down. Seems a little showy-offy to me.

I take it down, and hold the rosary, letting the beads slip through my fingers as I pray out loud, it’s much easier on a mental level, then trying to say the prayers, and keep track, all in your head.

A Rosary hanging in a car can be used as a holy reminder for people while they’re driving, and also as a visible symbol to others that you are a Rosary praying Catholic.

We need to be proud of our Catholic identity, and not hide it from the world. Would you call somebody who prays before dinner in a restaurant “showy-offy”? On Ash Wednesday, do you run home immediately after Mass and scrub the ashes from your forehead before anybody can see them? Did Jesus tell us to go out and proclaim the Gospel, or did he say to quietly keep it to ourselves?


I think that those K of C uniforms w/ swords and hats with puffy feathers are “showy-offy”

I guess if it’s being used, it’s not show-offy. I know someone who uses it as decoration though and rarely prays it. But if it reminds her of Our Lord, then I guess it’s working to a degree. If she thinks it’s just a pretty thing to display, well then, I’d have a problem there. (And I gave it to her to pray with, so that’s even more annoyance!)

And hanging things on the rear view mirror could be illegal here in Calif., at least (depending on the size of the object and whether it can obstruct the driver’s view of the road, CVC §26708).
