Premiered in theaters on this day in 1977.

May the Force be with you… always. 😃

Hi Edward,

I can remember hearing about the long lines waiting to see the movie when it first came out.

My Dad and I went to see it not long after it premiered, as he was a huge fan of Sci-Fi/Fantasy films. We both loved it.

I think that it’s still my favorite out of all of the films in the series, of the ones that I have seen so far.

What’s a bit weird is that the tidal wave of popular culture that the movie initiated has robbed me of any memory of actually seeing the movie in the cinema (the only place to see movies back then, except for television) although I remember the effect the movie had on me very, very clearly. Just not who I saw it with or where, or any other details of the actual act of going to the movie theater to see it. I do know I didn’t see it 17 times like some of the people I saw bragging about it on television.

The one thing I clearly remember about the first time I saw it, is when the Death Star exploded, I exclaimed, “Yay! They blew up Darth Vader’s ship!” My mom corrected me. 😃

I clearly remember looking up at the stars in the night sky after seeing Star Wars for the first time, and letting my imagination run wild.

I saw it in Japan. Since it was a first run movie over there, it was shown in English with Japanese subtitles on the side. It was also a HUGE bomb; there were 10 people in the audience and 8 of them were Americans. The studio did a much better job promoting the second film and attendance picked up after that. A good story brings 'em in every time.
