Syele…Catholics don’t attend Mass for fellowship with each other, but to worship God. The fellowship and unity of the Holy Spirit is there, though you do not perceive it. You would find plenty of ’ social fellowship’ if you were involved in other parish activities.
Probably Syele was saying, We attend service to worship God, fellowship with the members are either before or after service which is a normal practise for most protestant church. Protestant has five principle that we have to know and carry out all the time
Worship, Fellowship, Evangelise, Ministry, Praying.

Blue Serenity:

Your profile says that your non-denominational, am I correct?

If so, then I have two points to make:
  1. “The memorial aspect” for you is nothing, the Eucharist is playacting. But for Catholics it is the True Presence of Christ among us as instituted in Scripture and remembered since the earliest gatherings of Christians in the Mass.
This infers to me (and I hope I am mistaken) that
  1. Your characterization of our Mass as being “melodramatic” is disingenuous and off point to the original posting. At worst, you are being disrespectful of my beliefs as a Catholic in the Eucharist.
Pax Christi
Whoa! Hold on there! :eek: I meant no disrespect.
Yes, I belong to a congregational church but I know many Catholics (my in-laws are Catholic).
I know Catholics view the Eucharist as a memorial AND a reinactment of the last supper. Afterall, Jesus says “do this in remembrance of Me” and Catholics translate that as literal. I understand where you’re coming from.
I apologize for my word selection. Grammer is not my strong point so my choice of “melodramatic” maybe wasn’t the best.
I’ve been to a handful of Catholic Masses during my life and they have a mellow and somber tone to them. Am I correct? If not, please charitably correct me. 😉

Mass serves four purposes:
  1. adoration
  2. atonement
  3. thanksgiving
  4. petition
“Happy clappy services” tend to omit number 2. Because the mass recreates the sacrafice of Calvary, it seems unbecoming in my opinion to have upbeat music and spectacles during this time. The point of going to mass is not to be entertained, at least not in the same way you are when you go to the movies or watch TV. Given the grave character of the Holy Sacrafice of the Mass should invoke in its participants, the use of “worship and praise” music is inappropriate.
I think you just nailed it on the head in the section I bolded from your statement. There is no ‘Sacrifice of the Mass’ in these modern, contemporary, happy-clappy services. Although, I am no big fan of these guitar & drum worship services I believe they are an opening to the love of Jesus Christ. For many people this love may grow into a greater love of **His Church ** and less for My happy-clappy church.

I think it all boils down to reverence. This morning I was at midnight Mass and the priest danced the polka to Jingle Bells up and down the aisle with a life sized stuffed frog dressed as Santa (the frog was dressed as Santa the priest had on candy cane vestments). If the priest wants to do this sort of thing, lovely, but ihmo, it doesn’t belong in Mass. It doesn’t promote the sense of awe that we’re supposed to have being in the presence of our God.

I think he was trying to show us how we need to dance as members of the Church with the bridegroom Christ and not be wallflowers. But it really didn’t make me feel like wanting to dance. However if he was just trying to get our attention, he did. I’ll never forget the swirling of the white vestments and those green frog legs.

I’m interested in getting peoples opinions on the “Happy-Clappy” entertaining services found in some protestant demoninations, mega-churches and also filtering their way into some Catholic parishes. Is this type of service good and reverent to God? Are people getting more out these services with the stage productions? Do they honor God?
Hallelujah.
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in the firmament of His power.
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His abundant greatness.
Praise Him with the blast of the horn;
Praise Him with the psaltry and harp.
Praise Him with timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.
Praise Him with loud-sounding cymbals;
Praise Him with clanging cymbals.
Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.
Hallelujah.

Sounds link a ringing endorsement of happy clappy to me 🙂

Ah, Valke, my friend…I grew up in the Holiness camp of protestantism. One of the things that we were apparently supposed to be protesting was musical instruments!! We all sang,😦 mostly out of tune, & 😦 always very slowly…
Then someone died & left the church a piano…The membership had a meeting, & it looked like the piano was going to end up rejected…One man even got up &:mad: :mad: exclaimed, “When the ‘wooden brother’ [read 😛 piano] comes in the church, I:mad: :mad: go out of it!!”

My grandmother stood up, & quoted that very Scripture.The Wooden Brother came in,** and** the man stayed…
But I still don’t approve of Dancing Priests with Frogs…nor Dancing Ministers w/Frogs, nor Dancing Rabbis w/Frogs either!!! (Psst: Are frogs even kosher???)

I am a Catholic, and I don’t think Mass is melodramatic at all.😦 In my last post, I simply said that Mass is just as valid and just as much worship of God regardless of the style of music played during the Mass. I have charismatic Catholic friends who are very devout Catholics and completely understand and love our Lord in the Eucharist.

And for our Protestant brothers and sisters, they are worshipping God whether or not they choose traditional hymns or praise/worship style of music at their services.
Makes perfect sense to me. Charismatics may not be my cup of tea. But who am I to say they aren’t sincere and devout, when the same could be said for me. I won’t do that.

I remember reading two things:

Make joyful noise unto the Lord. “joyful” is expressive, up tempo, and heartfelt.

Also, where ever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst.

If Happy Clappy is your thing and it brings you to our Lord go for it.

If you prefer the old trad quiet mass…knock yourself out.

It gets us nowhere as Christians to say that “one” style of music, is better, or more reverent than the other. Our goals are the same. It is a preference.

Well, he was wearing white vestments with embroidered candy canes (embroidered ornaments, too). I’m guessing someone gave this to him as a Christmas gift at some point. Maybe someone made it for him.
Well, that’s definitely better…At least, it erases the:eek: :eek: image I had in my mind…You know, like of this priest dressed like a:bigyikes: :bigyikes: barber pole, waving :whacky: Santa :whacky:Kermit!, & doing thehttp://bestsmileys.com/dancing/12.gif polka…http://bestsmileys.com/paranoid/2.gif

Didn’t they have bingo?
Ok RR, this is the last straw! I mean urrg…you can mess with anything or talk about anything that us Catholic’s do or don’t do…but leave our bingo alone! That is just going a bit too far. :mad: :mad: :mad:

Hi,
Are you seriously mad or are you joking? Ive never seen you get mad.:eek: If you are mad why? I use to go to bingo with my mom in a CC down the street and they even let me participate:D Those were the good ole days;)

I’m sure he’s joking. You can’t get mad about bingo, although it is a Catholic stereotype here in the US.

I guess catholic churches still have bingo? I guess they see nothing wrong with it.
