Just a friendly reminder that today is the Ember Wednesday of Advent!

Still celebrated in the 1962 liturgical calendar, the Ember Days, which occur four times and year and have been celebrated almost since Apostolic times (Christianized pagan holiday), are a time for penance (fasting and partial abstinence), thanksgiving for the gifts of creation that sustain us, and a time to pray for vocations.

Collect from today’s Mass:
Festína, quaesumus, Dómine, ne tardáveris, et auxílium nobis supérnæ virtútis impénde: ut advéntus tui consolatiónibus sublevéntur, qui in tua pietáte confídunt:
Qui vivis et regnas cum Deo Patre, in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum.
R. Amen.

To those fortunate to be an altar server at the EF, remember the multiple Lessons and not to go too early to move the Missale!
 
In the early Church every Wednesday throughout the year, as well as Friday, was a day of penance/fasting. This is still the case in the Eastern Churches. Ember Wednesdays / Ash Wednesday is a remnant of this in the Latin Church.

It’s also the Feast of the St. Thomas, the Apostle.

I was able to attend low Mass today and we prayed the feast day propers with a few Ember Day commemorations.

Ember Fridays are traditionally a day of fasting and abstinence, which is optional today.

Day 2 of the Ember Days is also off to a good start. Saturday has always been my biggest challenge. Friday is the easiest because I always Fast & Abstain on Fridays. 🙂

Got’er done. It wasn’t as bad as it has been before. I remembered all day Saturday. Feel pretty good about it. 😃
 
Saturday’s my big hurdle too. I don’t eat until after 5pm and no meat at all.
