Happy Father's Day!?

I’d like to wish all the fathers out there a Happy Father’s Day this weekend.

Ever since becoming a father I have noticed the difference in coverage of Father’s Day and Mother’s Day. The week before Mother’s day all the media outlets pull out strong female role models and great stories about being a mother. What happens in the run up for Father’s Day. Not much. The only mention of Father’s Day I saw on most of the major news sites was on MSNBC, a mention of how a gay couple adopted 3 children and since they are both father’s they have twice the Father’s day.

Well at least in the Catholic faith we have a great role model in St. Joseph and the Father himself.

We actually celebrated early on Tuesday night with a nice dinner at my MIL’s…
My boys worked so hard on their cards and we baked a cake and everything… always fun to give extra love and thanks to great daddies!

Well, what little news media I watched had some nice stuff to say about Fathers. NBC’s the Today show had a feature on what you can give to dad. Then there is the Hallmark commercials, they never let you forget about buying a card for anyone .

I seem to remember some show this week (most likely on NBC 'cuz that is the channel I watch most for news) talking about and to great dads. Don’t ask me who they talked about and to because I don’t watch tv that closely no matter what I watch. I couldn’t tell you if they pulled out all the great moms either right before Mothers day so there.

At any rate, Happy Father’s Day to all the daddies and daddies to be and all those Grandpas and Grandpas to be - you all deserve a big [sign]Woo Hoo[/sign] because you are out there supporting your wives and daughters.

I was only addressing the online news sites. It is good to hear that some of the TV networks are doing better then the online news sites.

My husband says that the main reason everyone makes a big deal about Mother’s Day and not Father’s Day is that the moms care about Mother’s Day. The dads, well, a lot of the dads probably would forget about Father’s Day themselves if someone didn’t remind them.

I’d like to commend those fathers, who stay with their families. Taking an active part in raising their children. Playing with them, passing on the faith, teaching them morals, correcting when needed, providing for their needs and many other fatherly duties. I salute you.

To: All priests- I wish to say Happy Father’s Day.
You are special to us and our faith community. For you are entrusted with our spiritual well being. You are a Father to us. Thank you and bless you.

Personal note: I grew up without a Dad. I have not seen him, since I was a baby. We never made contact. I don’t know his location or even if he is still alive. I hold no grudges against him. I hope that where ever you are, that you have a good and happy life.
My Grandpa (Mom’s Dad) was around and did help raise me. I got my strong Catholic faith, mostly from him. Although it took his death for me to finally realize that. I returned to Church, joined the young adult group, went through RCIA, and finally got confirmed at Easter Vigil 1984. Thank you so much Grandpa for all that you did for me, in absence of my father. May you be blessed and rewarded with heaven.

Today I’m afraid that there are a large number of people who can no longer relate to the reality or the concept of a father. This was not always the case as most marriages never suffered from the ravages of divorce. Many individuals today did not have the benefit of a father at home, or even in their life to any extent. 50%+ of marriages, including Catholic marriages, end in divorce. Single parent families are painfully common.
A human being needs both a father and a mother, male and female, to receive the fullness of nurturing, love, and support. One parent can try heroically to fill both roles, and do quite well, but it is never the same as when mom and dad fulfill their respective roles.
A father, along with a mother, obviously collaborate with God to bring life into existence. You will never know the eternal joy of Heaven without your father and mother saying yes to life. A father protects and supports his family. If evil in any form threatens his family a father must engage the evil and protect the family. This is true most of all spiritually, but also physically, emotionally, economically, and morally.
Dad has to fight many a battle to win the war of the salvation of the souls of his spouse and children. If dad doesn’t even know there is a war, where would that leave his family? How many sleepless nights fathers have had had worrying how to provide for mom and the kids? How many days he has come home from work bone tired, trying to provide a life for the family better than he had? How many deaths has he died agonizing over the welfare of each of his children?
Remember your father this Fathers’ Day. Pray for him, alive or deceased. While you are doing this, hopefully through a day started with the Holy Eucharist, remember your priests, who are truly fathers in the spiritual sense. They too have expended a lot of “blood, sweat, and tears” trying to insure the well-being of their spiritual children. Without the priest there is no forgiveness through the sacrament of Reconciliation. Without the priest there is no strengthening through the sacrament of Confirmation. Without the priest there is no anointing of the sick. Most of all, no priest no Eucharist—the Source, Center, and Summit of the Church’s life.
Let’s pray for our fathers, both biological and spiritual, this Fathers’ Day, and every day. We need them, and they need us.

My Dad sniff sniff is overseas on holiday in Europe, but gets back I think today or tomorrow :extrahappy:

Course it isn’t Father’s Day here in Oz - we have ours in September.

Thanks for the greetings. I particularly like the commercial for…if there isn’t there should be a Father’s Day parade. I don’t remember what they were advertising, probably to purchase something for your dad on this day…but the concept sounds like a good one, especially in this day and age when so many families are single parent. In our diocese the African American Deacons are hosting a Father’s day brunch for families, so that families can be supported…especially healthy families who so often receive no support. Science has proven that intact families are best for children…So Happy Father’s Day, my fellow dads.
