And a very happy Hanukkah to you, sir!

God bless you and yours!

Happy Hanukkah to you & your family & to all celebrating. Have a safe time & enjoy the family. God bless all who are celebrating.

Thank you so much, Della. That’s a good question. Actually, the Books of the Maccabees are not part of the official Jewish canon although some Jews read and study them anyhow. The holiday of Hanukkah is not mentioned in the Written Torah, and the Maccabee brothers themselves celebrated Sukkot in their re-dedication of the Temple. The description of Hanukkah did not appear until the Oral Torah (Talmud) was compiled, particularly in the Gemara portion. Even here, specific rules of the holiday are not detailed. Nonetheless it has become a tradition of celebration. The Hebrew word “Hanukkah” literally means dedication but the historian Josephus referred to the holiday as the “Festival of Lights” and the name stuck. Further, the menorah has become a lasting symbol of Judaism.
I have a question. Since ( as you seem to realize) only 1 and 2 maccabees tell the story of Hannukah (which I believe, but correct me if Im wrong, is one of Judaism’s biggest holidays), and that the lack of hebrew originals was the rationale for their exclusion from the jewish cannon, due to the fact that atleast portions of hebrew copies have been found among the dead sea scrolls, should that not reopen the possibilty of their being recognized as scripture?🤷

We used to have potato pancakes and apple sauce often, especially during Lent. We are not even Jewish, but the potato pancake recipe my Grandma had was special. It also meant grating the potatoes to make them into pancakes.

Chag Urim Sameach!

A religious holiday which celebrates by eating fatty foods. Love it. 😃

It is the Christmas season of peace, joy, hope, and light. Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights and the joyous celebration that commemorates the re-dedication of the Temple and the miracle that took place there. It begins this Sunday evening, Dec. 6th, and continues until Monday evening, Dec. 14th. One candle is lit every night to commemorate the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days instead of only one. We need as much light as possible in our current world of darkness. Best of all, Hanukkah is a holiday consisting of eating food which is oily, fattening, and delicious such as potato pancakes (latkes). Happy Hanukkah!
Oh Meltzerboy, I’m not Jewish and we never celebrated Hanukkah but you just gave me a huge craving for my departed mother’s potato pancakes! They were popular in my family of Hungarian Catholic ancestry as well. I recall standing by the stove eating them as soon as they cooled just enough to bite into. So delicious! Happy Hanukkah my friend and peace and light to the world. Enjoy the potato pancakes. And be sure to have one for me while you’re at it! 👍
