Happy Hannukah to you Meltzerboy.

(I love latkes…the potato pancakes…and although I have been given instructions several times by matronly Jewish ladies, mine don’t turn out as good as theirs.)

Happy Hanukkah!

Anyone else noticed more Christians taking time to celebrate it this year? Like all things Jewish, it sure folds neatly into orthodox Christianity - the temple, once destroyed, is re-dedicated. Beautiful.

I have a question. Since ( as you seem to realize) only 1 and 2 maccabees tell the story of Hannukah (which I believe, but correct me if Im wrong, is one of Judaism’s biggest holidays), and that the lack of hebrew originals was the rationale for their exclusion from the jewish cannon, due to the fact that atleast portions of hebrew copies have been found among the dead sea scrolls, should that not reopen the possibilty of their being recognized as scripture?🤷
We Jews are a traditional lot and we don’t reopen issues that were sealed by the great rabbis even before the period of the Talmud, including questions of canon. I think your impression of Hannukah’s importance is mistaken. It is a very important holiday, of course, but in the scheme of things it is not as important as the Biblically mandated holidays, such as Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.

It is the Christmas season of peace, joy, hope, and light. Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights and the joyous celebration that commemorates the re-dedication of the Temple and the miracle that took place there. It begins this Sunday evening, Dec. 6th, and continues until Monday evening, Dec. 14th. One candle is lit every night to commemorate the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days instead of only one. We need as much light as possible in our current world of darkness. Best of all, Hanukkah is a holiday consisting of eating food which is oily, fattening, and delicious such as potato pancakes (latkes). Happy Hanukkah!
Where there have been Jews there has been success. Folks like Maimonides contributed greatly to the world. Today many Jews are doctors and teachers…following in the footsteps of people such as Maimonides.
