Happy Juneteenth,

What is you parish doing for Juneteenth?

It was on this day, June 19th, in 1865 that Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and the Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, spreading the word that the Civil War had ended and that Slavery was abolished. Receiving this news two and a half years after the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Texas were among the last to be freed in the nation. Juneteenth is the United States’ oldest celebration of the end of slavery. Today as a nation, we unite regardless of race or social division, to acknowledge our nation’s past, to celebrate how far we have come, and to work towards a brighter future.

Who even came up with the whole slavery thing here in the US? I wonder about that sometimes.

It’s Fathers Day … Go call your father if he’s alive and thank God for being our heavenly Father!
 
I agree that Juneteenth is something we should all celebrate, and I’m a little surprised more states haven’t made it a state holiday. Seems like a good excuse for another midsummer holiday.

Our parish celebrates Father’s Day. Nothing is celebrated regarding Juneteenth. It is celebrated in the ethnic neighborhoods of our city, but not out in the 'burbs.
