I confessed my sins on Sunday and received communion that same day. I felt since then the state of sanctifying grace and holiness about me. I havent been compelled to commit sin especially lust since its my biggest vice. Well today I’ve had a couple of moments playing my favorite online game with other people where I kinda got annoyed. I wouldn’t say angry but annoyed. it resulted in me downtalking one of my teammates. I didn’t cuss them out or wish ill on them but almost belittle them and their efforts to play. Basically I got a bit too competitive in the game and I’m wondering if I am still in the state of grace or if I committed venial sin. Im examining my conscious but it’s kinda hard for me to come to a conclusion. I don’t want to receive Jesus in Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin thus adding another mortal sin that I must confess.

Review the three conditions for mortal sin. I’m pretty sure it is venial. Peace be with you.

That’s not a mortal thing at all. Just a minor dust-up. Nothing serious. Just take it easy.

Venial sin does not remove us from a state of grace. What you described is not mortal sin.

Conscience. A psychotherapist examines your conscious.

Don’t worry. It ain’t mortal!

It’s very normal to worry about your sins right after confession. Some people say it’s the devil trying to trick you to think that you’re no longer in the state of grace (although that would mean that you go back to confession, so I don’t know why it would do that), others say it’s your “very clean” conscience. I don’t know but all I know is that you did not commit a mortal sin 🙂

For a sin to be mortal, you must commit grave matter while also knowing what you did was grave and fully consenting to it. Venial sins do not cut off the life of grace in the soul like mortal sins do. You’re okay. Be at peace. 🙂

I, too, sometimes struggle with moderate scrupulosity.

One of the most helpful things I ever found was this examination of conscience: materdeiparish.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Examination-of-Conscience-for-Adults.pdf

Not only does it list sins by virtue, but it separates mortal sins from venial sins, and also gives spiritual helps.

You’ll notice, on page 21 of the examination, that there are two *venial *sins listed which seem to fit what you’ve done:
  • Have I hurt others by my flare-ups of anger and impatience?
  • Have I made cutting, sarcastic remarks to others?
As such, I would trust this examination, and I would consider your behavior to be objectively a venial sin.

(Now, this examination is older, and there are a few sins listed therein which were once matters of Church discipline, but which aren’t any more. You should recognize them when you see them, things like owning Protestant Bibles being against Canon Law.)
