Hard sayings of Jesus - How to live them?

If you read Luke’s account of the Serman on the Plain, Lk 6: 27-42, He says “Woe to you who are filled now, you will be hungry, woe to you who laugh, you will grieve and weep, woe to you when all speak well of you…”

These are obviously hard sayings. I am interested in how we are supposed to apply these sayings to our lives? How do you all interpret these?

These words are addressed to the Pharisees, who placed hardships and mandates on the people, who they were suppose to serve. They lived in high places of honor, and presented themselves as righteous men, all at the expense of the people.

The beatitudes which precede these verses, Jesus gives the people the message of hope, for all who follow him.

Its a good practice to read the footnotes in your Bible, when something isn’t easy to understand. The footnotes provide the proper context of what is written.

Thanks Jim. The New American Bible I have has this as the footnote: “the woes, addressed as they are to the disciples of Jesus, threaten God’s profound displeasue on those so blinded by their present fortunate situation that they do not recognize and appreciate the real values of God’s kingdom”.

I guess this is why I think that it applies to us. We can be blinded by our good situation.

I think those particular verses in Luke (ante his previous beatitudes) are applicable particularly to Americans, and to the developed Nations formerly known as Christian in general.

What God gifts to us are for the common good in both material and spiritual goods…
