Hey everyone

I have been thinking and I would like yalls opinion. As yall probably know I have been looking for a job to work at until I move in April (I already have a job where my Uncle works in the town I am moving to).

But I need/want a job to work until I move. I have been looking with not a lot of luck. And I got to thinking maybe it would be easier to start up a small business to do until I move.

Something like window washing or car washing or something like that. Something cheap to start up. I would do gutter cleaning but I live in the one town in this country that 98% of homes don't have gutters:rolleyes:.
Entrepreneurs run in my family so its in my blood lol. What do yall think? Is that a crazy idea?

I think its a good idea. Around here nobody cuts their own grass anymore or rakes leaves cept me.

But what if it gets going good, and then you gotta move?

Well my parents and I are moving back to my hometown. Plus Iam going to go to college there taking Automotive. And my Uncle will let me work where he does (used car lot working on cars) to gain excperiance while I am in school. So it would be hard to beat that lol.

Have you tried any of the temporary agencies. I used them in college a lot. Since I went away for school and came home for summers. I found that I coudl go to a temporary agency and have a job in a few days. I also got a lot of diverse experience that has helped me later in life.

I had a friend who was in the window washing business. He did mostly storefronts and had quite a client list, so much so that he moved out of our neigborhood into an more upscale one, and did quite well for himself. He had a lot of people working for him to the point where he didn’'t have to wash windows himself anymore but just run the business from home.

An own business is a great way to go if you have the skills and the personality to run one and if it won’t hurt you on the tax/insurance level. One good side of owning a business, however small, is that you don’t have a boss. You can also pick your jobs to a large extent. And yes, after some time you operate the business and people work for you. Not like that’s a licence to overwork and/or underpay them, of course. 🙂

I run a small business essentially doing what women who work have no time to do: drop off and pick up laundry, run over the family budget, take the cars for oil changes, check on elderly relatives (mostly yack with them for 15 miutes-half hour), set up grocery lists for automatic grocery shopping, etc.

YES, a small business is easy to start, easy to maintain, easy to cart with you when you move in case you need more cash or plans fall through with your uncle. In your case, a “shade tree” mechanic who can change oil and do simple repairs at somebody’s house would be invaluable.

Put your confidence in God, becauase He just might surprise you. 😉

I’m trying to start web design, but finding clients is tough. Nonetheless, all is pleasantry with God. May His Will be done. 🙂

I have narrowed it down to 2/3 businesses.
  1. Window Washing. There seems to be a market for it. And it does not cost a lot to get into.
  2. Mobile Car Wash. Were I go to peoples homes or businesses and wash there vehicles. I could also add doing oil changes and basic tune ups to that.
I am leaning towards 2 because cars & trucks are my passion and I am going to be majoring in Automotive.

What do yall think? I am still putting job apps out too.

Don’t ya have to bring a water supply with ya to do that? Or do ya just find a faucet?

There’s an enterprising fellow who washes cars parked outside the church I attend. 😉 He enthusiastically waves you into a parking spot, then offers to wash your car while you are in church. Used to be just him, now there’s about 5 of them, working together.

Not a bad idea, initial materials not very expensive and you can replace them easily. If your price is right you should get the customers, and when you move away in a few months time it’s not an essential service you are depriving them of 😉 , after all they could wash their own cars again till they find someone else.

I say run with that impulse. If you have no idea where to start, go to www.startupnation.com and read EVERYTHING. You’ll need an idea, of course, but don’t think it has to be something previously unimaginable or flashy. You mentioned window or car washing. Maybe one of those would be a great start. Brainstorm it.

I’m currently “unemployed” myself. I was laid off on December 8, but in the meantime I’ve been working nearly around the clock to turn my side business, www.MyTruckBud.com into something I can replicate around the country. In fact, I’m slacking off from business plan writing right now, lol.

If you’ve got the impulse and motivation, run with it. The only guarantee is that if you do nothing, nothing will happen. You can’t sit around waiting for a pre-fabricated opportunity to fall into your lap. Trust me, I know. I’m 34 and wish I’d pursued ANYTHING at least a decade ago…

Check local regs on wastewater disposal before you get into the car wash thing. There used to be company around here that had mobile rigs that went out cleaned small trucks and courtesy shuttles for businesses, but they got into hot water when they ran afoul of regulations that prohbited them from letting the runoff flow into storm drains.

Apparently it’s OK for an individual to let his car wash runoff run down the gutter but not a commercial venture. But, that’s the hyper-regulated Twin Cities, your mileage may vary.

Well there’s been a lite change of plans. I looked into the Tech school here. And I am going to stay here to get my Automotive Technology degree. So I will definitely have time to try my own small business.

I am thinking about mobile car care. I will start out with the basics (oil changes tire rotations ect) and as I learn more in school I will add more to my business. Its just a thought right now.
