I’m actually curious if this thread has changed anyone’s mind. If anything, each side has been offered an alternate viewpoint. 🙂

Did anyone posts this letter that Cardinal Ratzinger wrote in 2003?

English translations of the two letters by Cardinal Ratzinger follow:

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
Vatican City
March 7, 2003

Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby!

Many thanks for your kind letter of February 20th and the informative book which you sent me in the same mail It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly.

I would like to suggest that you write to Mr. Peter Fleetwood, (Pontifical Council of Culture, Piazza S. Calisto 16, I00153 Rome) directly and to send him your book.

Sincere Greetings and Blessings,
  • Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

I mean, the historical data simply does not bear out this claim that Harry Potter is more of an evil influence than a million other things we have to decide on.
In my experience, a far greater issue arises for people from things such as Ouija boards, that get used as if the people were playing Monopoly. That is a actual problem that causes harm.

Thanks for posting. It does not necessarily refute the short note written by Cardinal Ratzinger, but if one reads the letter, one ought to read his perspective on the letter also.

Don’t tell @JamalChristophr. He’s looking for some E.T. to pal around with.

I really liked that Borg woman, but she was a little too “well-endowed” in my opinion. But that’s a different story all-together. (Sorry to go off-topic.)

My friends said she was too emotionally unavailable, in any case.

I find the letter rather funny myself. This letter was not a statement, but a letter to a person. It says good work, but send it to this person instead. C’mon. What would an author think getting a letter like that from a publisher? I note Pope Benedict didn’t follow up with any action of his own on this.

It is a “Thanks, but no thanks” letter.
