people need to lighten up about harry potter. it is just a book, it is most definitely fiction. there is no question.

Oh! Shame on the intelligent J.K. Rowling to possess an imagination! I mean really, they are just books, and very good books at that. If you want to talk about those FICTIONAL books being satanic and full of witchcraft, um…aren’t supposedly visions of well anything, supernatural as well??? Not trying to start a war here, but look, waging a religious war on a book is sad. Do people have nothing better to do than make up things about a book, that they probably haven’t even read? What are people supposed to do? Stop having an imagination? Come out of your shells and explore a little, the world isn’t going to bite you! If something is satanic, you’ll know it is. Trust me on that one! In the meantime, leave the awesome literary series that is Harry Potter ALONE.

I agree the furor about Harry Potter is out of proportion to the issue. The differences between what the Potter series is accused of and what you’ll find in various Disney movies is minimal.

It’s only fair to note, though, that the Vatican official’s remark was also blown out of proportion. He was speaking to the press about the report mentioned in the BBC article, and made an off-the-cuff remark in reply to a reporter’s question. You can’t fairly construe his remark as the considered opinion of the Vatican on this issue - I don’t think the Vatican has really considered the issue at all.

However, my guess would be that his personal opinion is probably similar to that of most in the Vatican who are even aware of Harry Potter. I don’t think he would’ve said what he did if he felt he were going way out on a limb.
