Harry Potter anyone?

Okay, I understand where you are coming from, but what do you read casually? What would you read for fun that is not the bible or the catechism?

Well, in my spare time, I tend to play video games, actually. But books? Not so much.

You could try reading some literary classics. I have found the works of Shakespeare (or at least those I’ve read) to be rather good.

Oh, ok, you’re into video games. Yeah, i play them too, but I would rather read. It’s kinda weird that I started with this community because I don’t spend all my time on computers, I’m usually reading.

I don’t like Shakespeare that much either. I’m forced to read it at school that’s all.

Oh and I think I made the wrong impression. I don’t need to find a book that I like, I have plenty of them. I have read each of the Harry Potter books at least three times. I just wondered what people thought considering that the sixth movie will be coming out in the spring and I found the 5th one on a movie channel.

I really liked the books, and as usual the books are much better than the movies. So I’d recommend reading the books 1-7, then checking out the movies. You can also check out “Looking for God in Harry Potter.”

I found the Harry Potter books to be quite enjoyable. It is the classic good vs evil and even though the characters are witches and wizards, I found it no more of a concern than the “good witch” in wizard of oz, or Gandalf, the good wizard (and no one can fault J. R. R. Tolkien’s Catholic credentials.
As far as what books to recommend if you are looking for a good and humorous “Catholic” read, I would suggest you see if you can find any of the Don Camillo books by Giovanni Guarschi. They were written in the 50’s but almost every story is a gem. The first book in the series is called the Little World of Don Camillo and was reputed to be one of Pope John’s favorite books. Some of the books can be read online - just do a google search. They are great and the main characters are an Italian priest and his adversary (and friend) the local communist major. The Narnia series by C. S. Lewis is a fantasy series that has a strong Christian allegory throughout. Also his Screwtape Letters is not only humorous and a good read, but also good theology.
If you like fantasy literature, than J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. They are my all time favorites to read. If you liked the movie, than you will love the books.

Hi I loved the Harry Potter series! As mentioned the books are much better than the movies (which I liked as well) and I am looking forward to the next release. Anyhow, I think the books were well written and if you like fantasy fiction they are a good read…The Chronicles of Narnia as also mentioned are a good series read as well but I would read them in the order they were published as opposed to how the sell them now numbered 1-7. I just finished inkheart and liked it alot…another good vs evil type plot.

I loved the Harry Potter books. I read all of them atleast once and a few of them 2 or 3 times.

If you’re after light, comic fantasy, you can’t really go past Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books. There’s around 33 or so of them, enough to keep you occupied for a while!! I agree with rslewis’ recommendations as well.

Harry Potter hmm. They were ok, I really enjoyed the first book where you are introduced to the world and where Harry and his friends have to solve the puzzles at the end of the book. I found it difficult to read the books in a row, as i found them repetative and a little boring reading them one after another. As the series progressed i disliked Harry as a character, he became whiny and spoiled (it seemed) only focused on one thing. Anyways as far a YA fiction goes I thought the books entertaining and generally fun, though they are not somthing i would spend money on to own, (library reads).
I really enjoy YA fiction even though i am not really considered a “young adult” anymore. I would recomend a series called the Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan, a great story with good characters, world, and plot. If a pretty simple read. Just sometimes it is nice to get away from all those serious stories or more difficult reads
So that is my little book review on Harry Potter.

Pratchett is light years ahead of Rowling as a writer. Anyone looking for books for kids should look into The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents won the Carnagie Medal in 2001, awarded to an outstanding book for children and young adults.

I don’t know if I will go and see the movie. It hasn’t gotten very good reviews at all…might wait till video. But in my head I pictured Mo as an older intellectual type and not the ‘action/adventure hero’ type which is how I see Brandon Fraiser-probabily because of the Mummy movies.
