I look after a 7 year old (I’m his nanny) and when he wanted to watch the movies his parents said if he read the book he could watch the movie. That way he knew what was going to happen in the movie and could decided if he really wanted to see that on screen. It also has incouraged his reading. I thought this worked rather well.

My 9 year is really sensitive to any violence in movies. The 3rd Harry Potter movie was on a week ago on tv. He and my daughter insisted on watching it (my husband and I watched it with them). Later that night, my son started crying and said that he was afraid to go to sleep because of what he saw in the movie (the wearwolves). I explained to him that it was all fake and make believe. The night before we saw the movie Rocket Farmer (about a farmer who builds a rocket in his barn and blasts off to outter space) and I was able to compare both movies to show just how silly hollywood can be. Hope this helps.

Problem is as the books got longer and longerand it got harder and harder to cover the plots in a two-hour movie.I I don’t know why they didn’t go the route of Lord of the Rings and make them an hour longer.I KNOW!

Read the books first then watch the movies. You’ll enjoy the movies a lot more with the knowledge you gain from the books. There’s a lot of stuff in the movies they don’t have time to explain in the movies so you kind of go what’s that all about? If you’ve read the books then you’ll know.

Boy, I tell ya…poor Pope Benedict. No good deed goes unpunished. All he does is write a thank you note to an author who sent him a free copy of a book, and all of a sudden, he is leading the anti-Potter brigades! Can’t people read past the headline and read the WHOLE article? Here is the series of events, gab1: 1) anti-Potter author sends Cardinal Ratzinger a copy of their book, thinking he will appreciate it 2) Cardinal Ratzinger (or more likely his secretary) sends said author a letter thanking the author for the book and recommending that said author take up any concerns about the Potter novels with JK Rowling or her publisher. There is no proof that Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict) ever even read the book that was sent to him, much less that he agrees with anything in it, and WAY WAY much less that he has any concern about anything in the Potter stories or has even seen one sentence of one of the novels.
On the OP’s topic…we ADORE the books here in our house, and see the movies because we like the books and the actors portraying the characters. I mean, could anyone in the world but Maggie Smith be McGonagall? Could anyone but Alan Rickman do Snape as well? And Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix LeStrange…just too good. However, usually we are not as satisfied with the movies as the books, but I warned my kids about that before they ever saw them. There is ALWAYS more in the books, no matter what book or movie. But the movies are fun. My own six year old has seen the first and the third movies with no ill-effects, but he is the kind of kid who likes to watch scary stuff like The Mummy and The Scorpion King with his dad and grandpa, so he may not be a normal 6 year old. It seems to be a real male bonding thing with them though, and it’s really cute.
And of course, the point was made before about how the kids are becoming teenagers and so there are the issues with them starting to “go out” with one another and such. You will have to judge based on that and your child’s temperament whether they are ready or can handle the movies.

I watched “Becoming Jane” at the theaters the other week and all of us girls went…Oh my gosh it’s Professor McGonagall and Mrs. Weasley in another movie together…We couldn’t even remember their really names

They need to make asure they dont let Kenneth Branaugh, Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter on the set at the same time. Yes, but at least it was watchable for me unlike movieGoF (which I did not watch at all until DVD, as I had hated the hash made of movie PoA). Movie-OotP was too short by a long shot, but it at least didn’t make me want to scream at the screen (that shtupid talking head on the Knight Bus … or what DID they do to the maze in movie-GOF?!)
It’s a shame the original actor for Dumbledore died.

I must say that I am dismayed at the level of support HP is enjoying in this thread! HP will most certainly not be watched by my children. It beats me how anyone can say there is nothing anti-Christian!
Here we have the hero who resorts to cassting spells to deal with the perils he faces - goes to divination, palm reading, teacup reading, sorcery classes. And no one has a problem with it!!! Catholics are warned not to indulge in any of these (see CCC 2116 & 2117) and Scripture preaches strongly against it (Deut. 18:10-12, Gal. 5:19-21) and you guys are okay to have your children exposed to it! Nothing anti-Christian about it?
I would rather my children turn to the lives of saints who exemplify true Christian virtues as role models for my children and myself. I found absolutley nothing that advances my salvation or is inspiring one to a deeper relationship with our Lord. Yes, I will probably be accused of being an HP basher - so be it. But I would like to ask you all one question and I urge you to be honest with yourself - would you watch HP with you kids if Jesus was sitting next to you?

I am currently reading, and enjoying, the books. I started book 1 on Friday of last week and today (Wednesday) I am already well into book 4. I find them well-written and captivating.
THAT BEING SAID…I do not think they are for children. Not for anyone under 15, I think, although that could depend on maturity. I find them to be confusing regarding good magic and evil magic. In reality, no magic is good magic, because it is all from the Devil. If you caught your kids playing Harry Potter and taking readings from tea leaves (which he learns in school) or casting spells with wands (which they do almost daily), would you be concerned? I would… I could see a child’s mind being easily confused about why it’s okay…and even good… for Harry Potter to learn divination, but it’s clearly not okay for us (as listed in the Catechism). I remember being confused about magic and messing around with auras and stuff until I was 16 or 17, but I was not raised in a very strong Catholic family, and I am sure that would make a huge difference.
So that’s my big concern with Harry Potter. I have not seen the movies yet, so I can’t really speak to them. I do plan to see them, though… and I am looking forward to it!

The books ‘mature’ as they go along. They’re designed to show Harry’s growth, and I think (depending on the kid) that the 8-10 crowd could easily read and understand the first two books.
But the movies (after the first two) are a big letdown.

I think you should read the books and preview the movies first. Depending on the child’s own personality I think they are way way to scary for pre-teens.
