My son is only six weeks old at the present, but when he is old enough I plan to enjoy Harry Potter with him. It’s a wonderful story. Most of the witchcraft is disney-style magic, not voodoo or anything like that. The dark wizard stuff is, of course, dark, but it falls into that same category. If a person is opposed to Harry Potter for the witchcraft then they ought to be opposed to Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia as well, for the same reasons.
The thing that I will probably counsel my child about while reading it is the way that the kids interact with each other. There is a strong theme of Harry and Ron wanting to “get even” with Malfoy, a sort of glorification of revenge and a theme of “hate your enemies and laugh when they fall on their face.” This is not consistent with Christian teaching and parents should talk to their kids about it when reading the books together.
