…at the 11 AM mass was followed by the usual dismissal for discussion of today’s reading.

(Yes, yes; I know, I know…in theory Candidates are not to be scrutinized, just the elect. So what do you want ME to do about it?)🤷

Only the 11 AM Mass had the Year A readings. Obviously, the Elects and Candidates were supposed to identify with the blind man, whose eyes were opened by Jesus.

I didn’t. I had also gone to the 9:15 AM Mass, with the Year C readings. I identified a lot lot more with the Prodigal Son. And so it goes.

Meanwhile, I am still trying out ways to cram 90 minutes of prayer into my life, in a token attempt to meet the suggested guidelines of the BSP and CFP.

My RCIA Sponser is active in the Legion Of Mary, and gave me the prayer card used. Whilst I cannot be a regular member, being unable to attend to Monday Night meetings or other activities, I can be what is called an “auxilliary”, which means I say the TESSERA every day at home, helped out by the cats. I preceed the Tessera with the daily prayer of the Confraternity of the Rosary, and satisfy both obligation at one time. Neat, huh?👍

sounds like you have a great sponsor
from the benefit of your experience, do you have any advice for prospective sponsors?

For starters, show up. Our RCIA class has had a problem with lack of sponsers, and sponsers not showing up when needed, especially at the rehersals.

That is why I cannot be an RCIA sponser next year, being unable to make the weekday meetings and rehersals that are usually in the evenings, when I am working.😦

In my RCIA, my sponsor was a very nice man a little younger than myself. Yet I didn’t discuss many problems with him because:

a) He had only been through RCIA the year before. I didn’t want to say or do anything to weaken his faith.
b) He was unmarried (and I wasn’t going to discuss marital problems with him).

So Andruschak, although you are really quite advanced for somebody in RCIA, I think you are wise not to be a sponsor right away.

We had enough sponsors, but I think sponsors should have the same (or similar) station in life as those they sponsor. But perhaps I overestimate what benefit I should have had from the relationship.

Well, I am a 62 year old male candidate who HAS been around the block a few times. My sponser was assigned to me, and she is an elderly Lady. I see her only when we have to be together for ceremonies. So I have not learned much from her, other then about the Legion Of Mary.

That is a wonderful thing to learn about. Andruschak, you have learned so much in the last nine months.

Before you underestimate what you learned from your sponsor, you should consider that your elderly sponsor’s many prayers for you must have had a great impact.

I know you know the value of prayer and you pray much. Consider that water doesn’t run uphill. It is quite likely that much of your desire to pray more and more is a result of who your sponsor is.

If every RCIA sponsor was a prayer-warrior, Legion-Of-Mary member, I’m sure 95% of all observed RCIA problems would not exist – at least not for long.

May God richly bless you and your sponsor.

Thank you for your insight. I hadn’t really taken that into consideration. 👍
