Greetings Windmill,

Again thank you for the heads up you gave in your response. I will wait on the Gregorian Missal.

The parish has expressed more interest in more Latin, but I don’t want to overwhealm them with it. Thank you for your counsel.

I will look inot the organ accompaninment. [Oh how I long for my other computer so I can go and check these links, these won’t load on IE6]

God Bless.

Greetings to those who have posted,

Thank you so much for your replies and your links. I will be able to go through the PDF. This is great guys, I am actually going to have some material to submit for approval to Father. Thank you so much for helping me on this.

I will think about getting VaticanII hymnal becuase it does have the Latin propers in English.

I will be asking questions off and of so please remained subscribed to this thread. I should be able to get my computer at the end of the month so I am looking forward to this.

God Bless.

When I first saw an Adoremus Hymnal, the thing I liked best was that it had the Ordinary of the Mass - Latin/English side-by-side - WITH THE RUBRICS!!!

I’m not familiar with all the hymnals being discussed, but to get the Ordinary with the rubrics into the congregation’s hands makes the Adoremus Hymnal worth its weight in gold.

I was told that the Adoremus Hymnal had the rubrics for benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in it. Can someone confirm this?

Sorry about the tangential question, but you guys seem like you are very familiar with the book.

Yes. It has the whole ritual.

I have been away and have come to this discussion quite late but would like to ask about Responsorial Psalms that were mentioned earlier on. We use the Laudate hymnal in my parish which I am not to keen on as it is badly laid out, and has a lot of the really tiresome modern Catholic hymns (as well as, thankfully, some of better ones and more traditional hymns from other denominations) and virtually no Latin.

But I have always disliked responsorial Psalms and wonder why we have to sing them responsorialy rather than being able to chant the whole Psalm congregationally. This is what they used to do at my Dad’s Anglican church (or sung to Anglican chant by the choir), and I love going to Vespers at Westminster Cathedral where, on two days a week when Vespers is done congregationally rather than chorally, we chant the whole Psalm antiphonlly which is much more powerful and beautiful. Does anyone know the logic behind the responsorial psalm?

Reciting the entire Psalm all the way through is indeed one of the options.

See #61 in the GIRM

It’s simply an option that most people don’t often experience.

Thank you. I hadn’t realised this was an option. I wish more of our church’s would grasp this opportunity then.

At the Anglican Use (Roman Rite Catholic) Church I was in, we sang the whole Psalm, too. You might contact OurLady of the Atonement Church in San Antonio and see how they do it. The organ parts seemed very simple, and the congregation knew the psalm tones by heart (I think there were only 6 tones that were used, and the psalm verses were notated with boldface and italics to cue the congregation on the note changes).

Yes the Rubrics mean a great deal to me. Another plus for the Adoremus Hymnal. Thank you Johnny.

No problem about the tangential question. After all anything that relates to the Adoremus Hymnal is allowed in this topic. Thank you for asking your question Tim.

Because the GIRM has come up, is there another online site other than the Bishop’s site in the United States that I can get my hands on this document? Thank you.

Another site where you can get the GIRM?

The Latin one is here. I don’t see why you need it somewhere else. If you’re looking for a .pdf, here it is, with adaptations for the diocese of the United States of America.

I don’t know “why.” But for some reason, ever since the Missal of Pope Paul VI came into use, most of us have been sort of locked-into the habit of doing verse/response/verse…

When I’m saying Mass without a congregation, I do the whole psalm straight through. I admit that I’ve never even thought about doing it this way otherwise. I guess it’s just force of habit.

I imagine the “why” is a relic of the 1970s push for “active participation” above all else. Yes, I use that phrase here in contempt.

I think you must be right as to the reason why, and yet the effect is the complete opposite. When the response to the Psalm is sung often to third-rate music, it makes it sounds like an advertising jingle (and few respond anyway as they have to compete with a cantor booming into a mike); when it is said it sounds flat and boring. Much better for the whole thing to be chanted - either chorally or congregationally. I think I will start a campaign!!😃
