Has anyone had any bad experiences with Ouija boards?

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “bad experiences”… because to the best of my understanding… ANY experience with a Ouija board is a bad experience. As Catholics, we are forbidden to dabble with any such implements of the occult.

This having been said, however… when I was a child (too young to know any better)… one time, we were over at my cousins house. I should mention that she was (and is) a non-Catholic and was a good bit older than most of the young cousins. Well, she had a Ouija board in her room. Without making too much about the fact (unbeknownst to my Catholic parent)… she “ushered” all the kids into her bedroom, where she proceeded to “conjure” up dead relatives.

The entire incident gave me the creeps… even at that young age. But at one point, this thing (the Ouija board) spelled out MY name. I was terrified, and ran out of the room. I don’t remember if my two sisters also ran out… I don’t think they did. All of us, have had problems in our lives… of falling away from the faith. Through the grace of God… and the intercession of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, I have been back in the Church for almost 4 years.

One of my sisters… the youngest, though… has been away for over 30 years. And my older sister is struggling with her faith. I have often wondered… if the “Ouija” board experience had anything to do with this sad trend in my family. I know that I have heard many priests (on TV, and otherwise) warn against the use of Ouija boards and any “occult” practices. They are very dangerous.

Catechism of the Catholic Church states in:

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

Stuff that involved the boards nearly killed me and ruined my life for years. I’m still struggling to get my head together after that and it’s been many years now. It was horrific, a cold streak of pain in my memory that I can’t be reminded of without tripping on it until I pray again. I did bad things and bad things happened to me. Bad bad things, I can’t share all details, but it s hard to move on.
 
No really dramatic experiences with the board for myself, but when I was 5, my older teen siblings had a ouija board. I had been having horrible dreams every night for several years, so the parish priest came to bless the house and chanced seeing the board near the tv set. So he said get rid of it. When we did try to get rid of it, we always found back in the closet underneath the “Operation” game. My mother began asking who was the person who was moving it back, but we all denied it----who knows. Just who knows—it could have been someone playing a trick.
 
As I recall The Exorcist was based on a true story of a boy who was possessed while fooling around with an Ouija board.

Correct. You can read the true story based on a diary kept by one of the priests in the book Possessed: The True Story of An Exorcism

The boy at the center of the story became possessed after playing with a Ouija board repeatedly.
 
When I was young and foolish I allowed myself to be in the same room as friends who were messing around with an Oujia board, on several occasions. Actually they even drew a big one on the floor, as they had heard that “it’s more powerful that way.” They used a peanut butter jar lid as the planchette. Long story short, I witnessed that thing moving all by itself spelling a nonsense word out, after all the kids had jerked their fingers away. One of the girls involved had some kind of entity attach itself to her via the board, and while it didn’t do anything beyond make occasional mischief in her house, it took her over a year to shake it.

Suffice to say that I do not recommend messing around with these things.
 
I saw the board rise into the air and spin while the planchette (pointer) kept talking, as a crowd of youth scooted away across the floor screaming. That was at a party. Worse things than that happened. Lots worse. People are lucky to be alive. I thank God and all who prayed for us to God for our very lives that we survived some of the stuff we courted with that board. It seemed fairly innocent at first. It wasn’t.

Wow, I believe you, but may I ask, were you a child when this happened? Younger or older than teens? Not that it matters, but seems like most folks were children when they messed around with the Ouija boards? Not that I would ever use one as an adult, but wonder if those are the primary users?
 
My beautiful cousin Mary Deborah was a cradle Catholic and began using a Ouija board in her early adulthood. She became very attached to the “game,” and suffered a major mental and physiological breakdown. She is since divorced many years and physically and mentally handicapped. She usually cannot work or live on her own. She has abandoned the Catholic faith and now bears a great deal of enmity toward it.

Stay far, far away from this occultic object.

I believe what you’re saying and agree occultic practices are very evil…but was there clear proof that your poor cousin’s problems and the use of the board were related? Either way very sad for her…

I don’t know offhand. I was very young at the time, and the story came to me by my mother. The only facts I have are 1) that she was leading what can only be called a normal, healthy, happy, and religious life before her involvement, 2) that she became truly engrossed in and obsessed with using the Ouija board, and 3)that very shortly thereafter she suffered a severe breakdown, from which she has never recovered.

My information is only circumstantial, I know, but it is still suspicious.

Dear Surf(name removed by moderator)ure,

If you are still in contact with your cousin, and she is mentally capable enough to comprehend the information, I’d recommend the St. Pio Center for Deliverance Counseling to her.

I also strongly recommend saying spiritual warfare prayers on her behalf, specifically any or all of the following:

Prayer for a Friend
Hedge Prayer for Return of Wayward Persons
Hedge Prayer for Protection of Others

Not at all, that all makes perfect sense, thanks for sharing, there is a very good lesson in this for all.

Keeping them is a curse. I know this sounds strong, but you can’t trust the boards because they are a vehicle for whatever comes through, and it isn’t always truthful( forthright). One might think it is just for “getting in touch” with the dead. But it isn’t that way only. Demons lie, because they have no incentive to be truthful. What you can’t see can lie…big honking lies.

I know this isn’t directed at me, but I and my friends were in college (aged 18 - 22 in the group) when the events I described happened.

Thank you so much, Becky. For the prayers, but especially for the reminder that I always need to pray for her. There have been so many great needs in my immediate vicninity the last six years that I have regrettably neglected my own cousin. I needed this call to action.

Certainly was interested in all responses, I always thought that kids were the primary ones who used these things…thanks

I was either 22 or 23. The crowd was mainly about 17-21 years old I guess and most of our occult-involved friends were between 16 and 22 but some were over 30 and a few under 16.
