I am interested to know if anyone here has ever experienced an ecstacy or an ecstatic state? We always hear about them with the Saints of yesterday but how about now?

I am interested in knowing if you have what it was like from a physiological point of view and how you determined afterwards that it might be an ecstacy?

Its my understanding that the Saints themselves, never knew they had experienced ecstacy as it happened.

They are so detached from everything including themselves, it goes unnoticed.

Either you are going to get a responses from “visionaries” or a bunch of druggies.

But in all seriousness, Fergal, it is highly unlikely people experiencing genuine ecstasies would talk about it in an online forum, or to anyone other than their spiritual director for that matter.

Anyone experiencing mystical phenomena needs the advice of a sound spiritual director to discern their experiences, since one can be easily deceived into thinking a psychological problem or a demonic deception is an ecstasy.

If you want to read a description of such an ecstasy given by a saint who truly experienced them, read The Interior Castle.

beckymarie is right- i can’t imagine someone who has experianced this sort of thing talking about it online or to anyone but a spiritual director. most of the saints have very unique experiances with the common denominator being only that they were fully aware of the presence of God and they couldn’t explain the experiance. i don’t know why they seem to vary in whether or not there are visions or physical phenomena. st john of the cross (if i am remembering correctly) says that ectasy and contemplation are two different things or experiances, but i guess that they would necessarily have the same source. if there is anything written about this stuff, it falls short because it is ineffable

Thanks 😊 My scientific mind is playing tricks again…

I am closing the thread. No more answers please!

Thank you!
