I’m thinking about adding this book to my personal library. Has anyone read it or heard about it?

Before Jerusalem Fell: Dating the Book of Revelation
by Kenneth L. Gentry

Merry Christmas!
Heck yes! I mean, no I haven’t read that book, but Ken Gentry is awesome!!

In a Presbyterian anti-Catholic sort of way.

He is a preterist, and teaches that Revelation was written before AD 70. The point being, that a lot of the prophecies that Christ and the Apostles (esp. St. Paul) gave referring to future events, had their immediate and main fulfillment in the Fall of Jerusalem. The radical END of the Jewish established way of worship. God’s official rejection of their rejection of Christ.

A good book that will be a synopsis of what Gentry will present is “The Destruction of Jerusalem” a short little book by George Hofford.

walt2000: What book(s) do you recommend for studying the Apocalypse? Your profile says you have had a 35 year interest in Revelations. What is your basic view /interpretation of the Apocalypse?
40 years ago I was pup tenting down the Alaskan hi way looking for pictures to paint. I was halfway down the handle when I seen the number 27072 .And could not get it out of my head it was some thing I could not shed. That number could not leave me .I found out 27 means ,the 27 book in the bible,72 means revelations ,I could not leave it alone , It became a abscission.Up all nights 10 hours at a time my wife would go to sleep and when she got up I would be still reading the bible ,just the last book in the bible ,it told me not to mix it with any other book of the bible, just revelations no other books or versions ,just revelation alone deaf and blind to any other points of view. And let it lead me along.

There is more to it, but that is why I told you to leave it alone, it was an obsession , I could not control . I found out it was different from any of the other interp’s . I still wish it was not reviled to me. Study the other 26 books and leave revelations alone. Sound’s funny.

Don’t buy it, you can steal it here. No, really! The publisher WANTS you to. I’m not kidding. I have downloaded many of the books from this site. I am quite familiar with Kenneth Gentry’s work. I also own hard copies of “Days of Vengeance” and “Paradise Restored” both great works (tho not Catholic) refuting Dispensationalism. Ray Sutton’s book “That You May Prosper” is also an interesting read. The publisher, Gary North, has also written a number of books but is a bit too abrasive for my tastes. The site really is worth a look.

My :twocents:

Peace,

Thanks for the less mysterious explanation. The last one was as mysterious as you say the Apoclypse is 😉 !

The Apocalypse was written to be read, and the Church is the one who should do the interpreting. That is why I feel confident with Robert Sungenis’, The Apocalypse of St. John. I know he stuck pretty much to the Church understanding of the key issues (Millenium, binding of Satan, etc.). He is consistent with what you are saying. In the introduction, he states:

“Lastly, many are tempted to interpret the Apocalypse as if it were written stride-for-stride with the prophetic symbols of the Old Testament. For example, if the exegete wants to discover the meaning of a symbol in the Apocalypse, the method he may employ is to find the meaning of that symbol in other biblical books that use an identical or similar symbol, such as Ezekiel, Daniel, Zechariah or the various other prophetic books. But although this sounds like a logical step and, admittedly, there are some cases of a one-to-one correspondence between the Apocalypse and the Old Testament, in many instances this is simply not true. One of the primary indicators of this unique attribute of the Apocalypse is that it never quotes directly from the Old Testament… Although the Apocalypse contains over 300 allusions to Old Testament figures and events, some direct and some indirect (e.g., Jezebel, Balaam, Sodom, Moses, Elijah), no exegete can treat lightly the fact that John never quotes directly from the Old Testament, or for that matter, even from the New Testament…Among other things, this lacuna tells us that, although the Apocalypse will perhaps borrow imagery and concepts from the rest of Scripture, it is a book with its own unique message, and it does not confine itself to the meanings employed in the Old Testament. It is our quest to discover precisely what that unique message of the Apocalypse actually is.”

P.S., have you gotten a copy of Sungenis’ book?

I am out in the country here ,have no access to these type’s of books. We have a lot of wild animal life .But as for books I ll make a list when we go into a large city .l will have to see if I can find it.walt2000

Neither Gentry nor Chilton are Catholic, but I would highly recommend either of those two books to someone who knows their faith well enough to sift the error from the truth (especially Chilton’s book). Chilton anchors all of his New Testament interpretation in the Old Testament, much like Scott Hahn does - so if you like the way Hahn does his exegesis, you’ll enjoy Chilton quite a bit.

These people haven’t a clue on under standing Revelations.
they brake the rule at the end of the book Rev.22/18.You can not compair the old test, that is there for the jew,and expect to understand Revelations, for the christion. It say’s do not add to or take any thing away, form the BOOK OF REVELATIONS.walt2000
