There are always going to be extremes and certifiable “nuts”. They are usually the exception rather than the rule.
The fact of the matter is that there are a whole lot more folks who are not churched in any Christian tradition. Secularism is the enemy; Catholics and Protestants had better realize that they are friends in the battle rather than enemies.
