Has Anyone Read "The Eucharistic Liturgies" or "On the Historical Development of the Liturgy"?

Baumstark is one of Adrian Fortescue’s sources in The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy.

I would recommend that book highly.

You have to understand that the Mass and the Divine Liturgy developed in different manners. Each rite had it is own individual development and it was partially affected by the other rites.

Take a peek at these three books:

The Byzantine Rite: A Short History
You better be ready to Google a lot of Greek words.

A Short History of the Western Liturgy
It was mentioned as a worthy reference for the Latin Rite in the previous book. I am waiting for it, it is in the mail. 🙂

The Mass Of The Roman Rite : Its Origins and Development
This is the calssic written by Jungmann

If you go to this web site ( newliturgicalmovement.org ) and look at the left side of the main page (Liturgical Studies) you will see a huge list of books that might help you.

I know but the price is not surprising considering that it is really two volumes of a scholarly book. If you were to look for this kind of books in a different academic filed you would be paying that much. I usually look for used books especially if the price is that high, in the past I have been able to find some very good deals.

I had both Bradshaw and Johnson as professors. Anything they write is top notch scholarship but it is written for graduate level students. It’s not always an easy read.

Paul Bradshaw’s book is brilliant and so well written. I have heard him lecture and he is so engaging and lovely.

He is also really nice. When our course was over we all took him out to lunch and we had a great time. He is so personable.

I finally got my book in the mail, it looks quite interesting. I spent $9.99 for an excellent used copy instead of $46 for a new one. The only “bad” thing with the used copy is that there is a small sticker on the title page. Maybe I am really cheap but that does not justify $36 of difference. 😃
 
This is all wonderful information. Where else can someone ask a question about a book and be advised by people who have met and studied under the authors. Awesom.

Understood. It is not a fiction paperback. Text books are not cheap. Even so, $175 was the price for used paperbacks. Hardcover in good condition is currently going on Amazon for close to $400. I’ve been looking to see if I can find it at a Church library or seminary.

For now I’ll try the Bradshaw and Johnson book and see if it gives me the level of information I am looking for.
