šŸ‘‹ Nice to see you back! Don’t stay away for so long! Alien and Aliens are my
favorite too. Prometheus and Alien 3 were okay.
Hopefully, somebody will see this thread that has seen it and can give us their thoughts.

I saw the movie Arrival and it was awful! I felt so bad about the money I wasted on
that. I would hope Ridley Scott would not make a movie that bad!
Huh. I really liked Arrival, it was one of my favorites from last year.

Thank you! I will try to do a better job of popping in more regularly.šŸ™‚

It sounds like the new Alien Covenant movie might be one to wait to see until later and not go to the theater. Maybe different reviews and more positive opinions will be posted. So far, though, I think it will not be a theater movie for me.

I haven’t seen Arrival, but I’m sure I will watch it sometime when it comes on television. Hubby likes a lot of sci fi and would stop on it and then watch until the end even if it is bad just to see how it ends and I will watch with him. šŸ™‚
Arrival was possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. Of course,
Hollywood loved it, so that tells you something.

I’m sure I shall see it at some point along the way. If it is too bad, I may have to busy myself with reading too while watching or getting up to get a cup of tea. But, we likely will see it sometime along the way.

This thread gives me an idea for reviving an old thread…

my son and grandson saw Alien Covenant yesterday. my son said it was better than Prometheus. so I might see it afterall.

I’ve seen it, a really violent movie and contains a scene of nudity which triggered back my porn issues, Ridley Scott tried the James Cameron way to make an action at the end. Not the best

my grandson said it was bloody, but I think they all have been.
still haven’t decided if I will see it for sure. won’t be for another week.

ā€œArrival,ā€ like the little-seen sci-fi ā€œChildren of Men,ā€ is well-regarded by many Catholics for its pro-life message.

I didnt really like Arrival either but it was refreshing to watch an alien related movie where they are not invading or depicted as being our creators (their little science experiment).

Id like to see close encounters of the third kind get a modern update, I think that would be a huge box office hit if done right.

Leave the lights on! It takes place in outer space. No alien lands on earth. šŸ™‚
Yes it takes place in space and as the tag line says, ā€˜in space no one can hear you scream’.

How could it be worse than Prometheus? I thought it was terrible. Visually it was beautiful. But the story was terrible. Alien was the best. I watched it again not long ago. It holds up great. Aliens isn’t bad but is more of an action film.

A remake of Close Encounters would be welcomed if properly done. Sometimes I think
when they do remakes they think they will get a pass because the first one was such a success. We all have seen some really bad failures at remakes or sequels.

I did not and have not read the book Arrival was based on. I found the dialogue boring
and confusing and very disappointed in the aliens. I wasn’t going for intellectual entertainment. I was hoping for a little action and there just wasn’t anything that grabbed my interest. I kept waiting and waiting for something to happen for me to say
this was worth seeing. That moment never came.

I felt the same thing with arrival, I felt like watching it was a waste of time when i learned it was their language that was their ā€˜gift’.

Have you ever seen the directors cut of Close encounters? It was much better than the original, the part at the end with the big ship landing/ alien meet and greet, directors cut had an extended part where they show the inside of the ship, and its a like a HUGE city within the ship, it was really well done for it being the 1980s, as were the aliens themselves imo, except for that one tall grey, he had this dumb look on his face during the close up shot, and it just looked fake overall. lol

No I have never seen the director’s cut of Close Encounters.

The aliens in Arrival, how they looked and communicated, was just a terrible idea. I don’t know if that was how they were described in the book, but really lame.

I am a fan of the Alien movies. I think the fist Alien is classic sci-fi.
I don’t go to the movies a lot anymore because of finances so I am very picky about what I see. Nothing makes me angrier than paying for the ticket, drink and popcorn and the movie is terrible!!
So I like to hear what others think about a movie before I go. I don’t trust movie critics!
I like to hear from real movie goers.
I’m done with the Alien fanchise after they made me sit through Prometheus one of the worse movies I’ve ever seen. Alien, Aliens and Alien vs Preditor were all good but the rest have been trash.

I finally saw Alien: Covenant last night. I thought it was a solid entry in the series, and a definite improvement over Prometheus. If nothing else, the effects / production design were outstanding, possibly the best so far in the franchise. And Michael Fassbender should get a Saturn Award nomination for best actor at the very least for his double role.

The one thing that didn’t work so well for me …** spoilers below **…

The whole ā€œflush the Alien out the airlockā€ ending. Come on, we’ve done that before. Can’t they figure out another way to kill it? And this rendition was way over the top, like Ridley was trying too hard to top James Cameron’s airlock sequence from Aliens.

Thanks for your review. I think I might go see it in a day or two.

I saw it, and wasn’t that impressed. Part of what makes the original so great is how Scott lets the tension slowly build until it becomes absolutely unbearable at the end. It’s brilliant. It makes Ripley’s victory at the end so satisfying.

This movie doesn’t have anything like that. There’s no build up. The alien pops up and starts killing people before we even get a chance to know their name. Then there’s a detour with some philosophical talk and some android stuff (that’s been done before.) Then there’s a rushed third act that feels like a greatest hits of Alien and Aliens, except in this one the characters are so bland I forgot their names before I left the theater. Then credits.

That’s not to say there are no good parts to it, but those good parts were already done much better in the original.

well, I was going to go see it tomorrow, but now, maybe not!

I mean if you really want to know the origin of the alien and if you liked Fassbender’s character in Prometheus you might enjoy it. And there are a couple of good jump scares. But yeah if you’re a big fan of Alien like I am I would recommend just staying home and watching the first one instead.

I actually just watched the original a few days ago and it still blows me away how great that movie is, especially with the technology they had back then. Just the one scene with Dallas in the airshaft was 100x more tense than anything in Covenant. Ridley Scott’s a talented director but it seems like he forgot how to make a scary scene work. Maybe all the digital technology has become a crutch for him. When your alien is a guy in a suit you can’t just show it, instead you have to be clever with lighting and editing to make the audience afraid of it. With digital effects, sure, you can make the alien jump through the air and charge down the hall but I don’t know, it really loses something. I guess it’s the whole ā€œmonster you don’t see is scarier than the one you doā€ thing.

I don’t want to waste my money so I might not see it. I don’t remember much about Prometheus. It will be hard to beat the first Alien.
