(Note: This movie is obviously for mature audiences.)

I saw it on opening night, and I enjoyed it. The acting was perfect, everyone did spectacular, and that includes even the youngest of the actors. I also did genuinely find it scary in some parts, especially with the opening scene that will be burned into my mind forever. I still prefer Tim Curry’s Pennywise over Bill Skarsgard’s though, but I still think Skarsgard did a really good job. The only point where I think Skarsgard out-performed Curry was in the opening scene, which no doubt was the most haunting point in the movie. The only real major problem I had with the movie was that I would have liked to see more of a development with the bullies. They certainly did amp it up from what it was in the 1990 mini-series to be more closer to the book, but I still feel like they could have done a lot more and explored deeper. There was one instance between two of the bullies that happened in the book that I was very much hoping they’d explore in the movie but they decided to omit it. Overall I give it a B+, and do recommend seeing it if you’re into horror. Anyone else see the movie? What are your thoughts if you have?

I have a lot of nostalgia associated with the 1990 mini-series so I suppose I have a certain bias towards it. It’s not perfect though, and I saw this more when I first started reading the book. I’d give the mini-series as a whole a B. The first half of the mini-series is the best, and Tim Curry really knocks it out of the park. The second part isn’t that great, especially with the ending and all, and Curry pretty much carries it the rest of the way. He was the best part of that mini-series, and was genuinely creepy.

I’d say the new one is pretty scary, but in a different way the the original mini-series so it’s hard to compare.

And yes, the opening scene is not nice. It’s very effective and sets up the whole thing. It just gives you a sense of dread throughout the rest of the movie.

I have watched the first IT the miniseries. I can’t imagine a better pennywise than the first one.

I’ll tell you this much, that scene is 100x crazier in the movie than it is in the mini-series.

I thought it was like “The Goonies” mixed with “Stranger Things,” so much so that I felt like I was watching “Stranger Things.” It’s really not a “horror” film, so anyone looking to be scared is going to be awfully disappointed. (“Get Out,” OTOH, was definitely horror and much scarier.) The movie did show why one of the bullies (the mullet-haired kid) was the way he was. The major theme, not unlike the 80’s staple Breakfast Club, is that parents can’t save kids from the horrors of the world - not necessarily killer clowns, but divorce, abusive parents, bullies, etc. - for an adult, that’s far more unsettling than killer clowns.

It gets bonus points from me for using “Fire Woman” by The Cult in one of the high school scenes, if that’s what it was, though I didn’t recognize The Cure song from the bathroom-cleanup scene.

The old one was MUCH scarier imo. This new Pennywise is not really that scary, just looks like a clown they were trying too hard, to make look scary.

I saw it opening night. Not scary at all. Mostly disappointing. The only thing I liked about it was the interactions of the young boys. Very similar to Stephen King’s Stand By Me. I laughed at the funny parts. I didn’t see any scary parts.

I haven’t yet since I’ve decided to read the novel first. I’m hoping to finish the novel within the next 14 days before the theatrical release is gone.
