Has anyone seen the Novitiate movie?

No, but it does peak my interest. I’ve read Catholic reviews about it and though they praise the production quality, acting and costumes, they are critical of how religious life is depicted and the reasoning and motive of a couple of characters.

Note, the director is not a Catholic nor religious. She barely thought about religion before she was inspired to make the film where she read a book about St. Teresa of Calcutta while at an airport, learned about her struggles, and then proceeded to read more books about religious life by ex-nuns. Also, the actress who plays the main character so happens to be an atheist. Despite this it’s said she gives a tender performance.

wow really? that’s all so interesting. Thanks for sharing!

I saw this movie. It was on my radar since it appeared at Sundance in January and it was finally playing in my area by the end of November.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty good movie. There were some questionable scenes that did not make sense to me (well, really just one scene that I am not sure why the filmmaker had it) but overall I feel it captured well the experience of discerning your vocation. I got confused sometimes as to which sister was doing what. I think the director was trying to tell too many stories with the novices so they all felt incomplete. I thought the climax was really powerful and I felt so surreal after the film ended. It took a while to get over the emotional effects of the film.

As a devout Catholic, I think there are some worthwhile aspects to the film and the story that was being portrayed. I don’t think the director was out to defame our Church. I think some scenes were not necessary, the film could have been just as poweful without the sensationalized bits. I think it was worthwhile to watch and as someone who is discerning and has stayed in cloisters, I could relate a lot to the young women.

I hope this helps. I have a kind of love/hate relationship with this film. And without spoilers I hope I was able to convey what was good and bad about it.

Also, the priest in the film is never wearing a collar when he is wearing his vestaments (i hope I am using the right term). That really bothered me!
