Has anyone used coconut oil for their thyroid?

My daughter is hypothyroid and we are trying to research the use of coconut oil and we are finding little backed up studies for this.

Have you had results when you tried it?

Have you heard of this?

I’m sort of a health store junkie if you will, and will always give something a try. I actually tried coconut oil (white pasty substance) a few years ago, although I don’t have a thyroid issue. It helps with energy, and immune function…and of course, it will give you glowing skin, and hair. I stopped buying it because I started taking other supps, and it just got to be too much to remember every day. lol

I think it can’t hurt to try it…it has good fats, so don’t be alarmed with the fat content in it. Did you consult her doctor before taking? It might be a good idea before taking anything you are not familiar with.

You are right about the dr. I will tell my daughter to talk to her dr.

Thanks alot.

I was concerned about the satruated fat content and calorie amounts in the coconut oil.

I think that it sounds like a good thing to try.

If you check on the net you find lists of foods that aid thyroid function, and the kind of foods that retard function…some like the cruciform vegetables unless streamed. Raw they’re retardant.

I don’t know how severe your daughter’s problem is, whether or she has Hashimotos Thyroiditis, but she will have regular blood tests to ensure her levels are right? If she relies on natural thyroid medication, your daughter may need to be particularly vigilant, as the long-term effects of inadequately treated hypothyroidism are not desirable.

All the best with this, Trishie

I actually bought a book on this…(told you I was a health store nerd:D ) and the saturated fat is similiar to that found in salmon, not bad. Not good to have more than a teaspoon or two per day, I feel. I used to mix it in my oatmeal, gave it a coconutty taste. lol
I will try to dig up some info to post here for you, on the fat concern. I had the same concern.

Fascinating.
Does anyone recommend any particular books on this? I’ve never researched the association between coconut oil and thyroid function.

The reason I’m interested is due to my postpartum history of temporary HYPERthyroidism.
My 2nd postpartum experience was much less severe… and I’m wondering if my extreme pregnancy craving for coconut milk Thai curries helped in that???
Interesting.😃

Books or websites with recommended reading?

I want to answer before this thread possible gets locked for asking medical advice.

Don’t try to do all the natural stuff without consulting the doctor. Hypothyroidism is dangerous if not caught early and maintained so please make sure you do everything with your doctors knowledge. (now there is a difference if you are borderline)

I myself suffer from hypothyroism and will most likely be on it for the rest of my life. Being on medicine or not being on medicine has a huge effect on my life from mental and physical stand points. I know if i miss even one pill. My body pays for it for a few days.

As for books on hypothyroidism I will look when i get home. I have a couple of books that talk about what type of dietary things you should eat and for those who are boderline what they can do to possible not have to be on medicine. They also talk about there difference between the animal vs synthetic hormone pills you can take.

Find a good endocrinologist doctor near you that you can discuss all things with. Take a list and ask tons of questions like what other medicines can’t you take. Also one of the biggest things that people believe is that if you fix your thyorid then you will lose all this weight. Its not totally true. You are now able to lose weight instead of your body constantly fighting you to keep weight but it doesn’t just fall off. You still have to work at it.

I will tell you that being diognoist was one of the postive turning points in my life. I final understood why i mentally and phystically felt the way i did.

The Healing Miracle of Coconut Oil is the book that offhand, I remember reading. It’s been a few years, and think I gave it to a neighbor when we moved last year. If you google coconut oil, you’ll see a plethera of websites to help you along. Good luck with it!🙂

I have ordered the book “The Coconut Oil Miracle” by Dr. Fife.

My daughter is in her mid twenties and has Congenital Hypothyrodism. She has been on synthetic hormones since she was three weeks old. She is under a doctors care.

I didn’t know about the diet for those with hypothyroidism. I will certainly check into that and have my daughter ask her dr. about that.

Thank you to all who are doing research and giving great advise.

Is there something wrong with taking a thyroid hormone? I’ve been taking one for 2 months so far because of hypothyroidism.

I thought it was for something else, ahem lol…not thyroid problems. Fascinating is right!
