Has Benedict XVI disposed of the CCC?

When you think about it, the Crucifixion of Christ was creepy and crooked, and ugly. But sometimes we don’t want to think about it. I like the “crooked” Crucifix. It reminds me more of Christ’s suffering. But everybody has their own taste.
👍

That’s how I see it, too.

I liked JPII’s crucifix. I saw it as a real part of him.

Thank you, I too loved the crucifix used by our last pope. It resembled the branches from an old tree and seemed more likely the cross he died on than the neat boards of the “traditional” cross. It does not matter what cross the pope uses, it is important that he guide his flock the way the beautiful man on the cross intended. It does not matter who makes the popes shoes, what color they are. How the pope represents Christ is important. Our job is not to criticize, it is to carry the true message by our actions.

Perhaps you weren’t around when this cross was introduced. I was. I would hardly call it traditional. But that’s OK. “I’m OK; you’re OK, lets just focus on the Eucharist”.
It’s quite traditional. First, it’s a crucifix with corpus and not simply a cross. Second it quite realistic – reminiscent of the older crucifixes one sees in some church and museums. Very traditional, yes indeedy…

I for one like the cross which Pope John Paul II used. As with other things discussed on this forum, I continue to be shocked at how people view things Catholic. Never in my wildest imagination would I even have thought of calling a crucifix creepy. I am beginning to think that I really as of a different age. I know that being born before world war II does not make me that far removed. from the present. I just wonder what (and I am thankful for) what I missed.

The crucifix which Pope John Paul II carried was far from traditional. Catholics here are absolutely fine with crucifixes that have graphic depictions of Christ’s sufferings.

The difficulty people have with the crozier of John Paul II was the weird, deformed corpus which barely had the figure of a man. That’s why it’s seen as creepy.

The crucifixion was ugly and unpleasant.

To say a crucifix is ugly or creepy is indeed not something a catholic would be expected to say.

Protestants are fond of saying such things. I’m not sure Blasphemy or Sacrilege would be the right terms, but those are the terms that come to mind when someone attacks an image of the crucified Christ.

People respond to works of art the way that they respond to them. A crucifix may be rendered so that some people are going to find it moving, while others find it creepy.

I know what you mean–when you find someone does not like art that you find moving, it is like hearing them dismiss the Pieta as “depressing”–but I think people need to have room to be honest. Otherwise, we might get into these “Emperor’s Clothes” approvals of art that is nothing more than a crude attempt to be shocking. We’ve all seen and heard about those.

Look down upon me good and gentle Jesus, while before Thy face I humbly kneel and with burning soul pray and beseech Thee to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment, while I contemplate with great love and tender pity Thy Five Wounds, pondering over them within me and calling to mind the words which David, Thy prophet said of Thee, my Jesus, “They have pierced My Hands and My Feet, they have numbered all My Bones.” [Psalm 21: 17 – 18]

A human being was crucified on the Cross. The problem is that the corpus on that crucifix barely looks human. That’s the objection.

After what Christ had gone through he would have been barely recognizable. We need to understand what He did for us.

That is exactly what I was thinking, the Crucifixtion would have been very creepy as it would have been seen in stark reality. So that crucifix did not offend my sensibilties.

i like JP2’s CCC, in fact i have a number of them in my house that i bought when i was in rome. 🙂

Personally, I think JPII’s silver/aluminum staff looked rather nice in contrast with the ornate, golden vestments Benedict XVI has been wearing as of late. I really liked the way it looked with the cope of Bl. John XXIII at the Urbi et Orbi. I also really like the way it looks with roman style vestments, as seen here…

The Ferula of Bl. Pius IX would look horrible with a fiddleback, in my opinion.

Hmm… I never thought about how the crucifix would complement the vestments, but looking at the picture, I must say that JPII looks quite nice in the Roman chasuble and his papal cross… I can’t really picture the BXVI in a fiddleback carrying the “current” papal cross… Then again, I haven’t seen pictures of BXVI in a fiddleback…

Amen. I actually like the one Pope JPII carried a great deal more than the one pope B16 now carries.

It doesn’t much more traditional (or more accurately historical) – a realistic rendering of a man crucified. Surf the web a bit – I’m not sure if that garbage is stuff up there but many hardcore anti-Catholic bigots used to vilify that crucifix…

So very true…

It’s remarkable what some people will spew out based only on their personal opinions.

That’s just the thing. I don’t think the depiction is very realistic at all.

I find crucifixes with graphic, realistic displays of Christ’s sacrifice to be quite moving.

If that is your opinion, fine. No biggie. When I look at it I see a crucifix.
