We all agree that Christ has fulfilled the Jewish spring festivals. (Passover, Unleavened bread, First fruits, and Pentecost) However differences of opinion arise when it comes to the fall/autumn festivals of Trumpets, Day of Atonement and Tabernacles.

Some say the fall festivals prefigure the resurrection at the last trump and are yet to be fulfilled. Others, in particular those of Preterist persuasion, say they were fulfilled in AD 70.

My question asks, what is the Catholic view? Did Christ fulfil the Jewish fall festivals? how were they fulfilled? and if they haven’t yet, when?

Scott Hahn has a whole series of talks, by himself and others, on his website, St Paul Center, under Audio Courses. The talks are called “Feasts of Faith.

Basically it points out that several big Catholic holy days are descended from Jewish feasts, including the autumn ones, and that the specific liturgical language and readings often indicate this. It’s just not clear to us because we’re not first century Jews.

There’s also an online Bible study (free with free registration) on the website.
Check it out!

That said, there’s a book also called Feasts of Faith, but by some non-Catholic guys. Not about Catholic holidays at all.

The Old Testament liturgical year is fulfilled in the Catholic liturgical year. The plan of salvation was fulfilled by the redemptive death of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 5
17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.

Thanks for the link to Scott Hahn’s “Feasts of Faith”, Mintaka. Too late to start listening tonight, but am looking forward to starting tomorrow.

Thanks. Actually Ive been reading one of Dr Hahn’s articles and he does a great job of my question. In the paper I was reading he reminded us of John 7:37-39.
On the last and greatest day of the (Tabernacles) festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
So, I am concluding that Christ fulfilled the spring festivals at the Cross, and the fall festivals at Pentecost. Does that seem about right to folk here?
