Has creation stopped or is it continuing?

Is God finished creating the universe or is He continuing to create the universe? I ask this because the universe is expanding. So, is God continuing to create new things in the universe or is creation finished? What does the Catholic Church teach about this? I feel like I should already know this but I don’t.

When scientists say the universe is expanding, they mean it is moving outwards from a perceived central point, almost as if from an explosion.

However, that doesn’t mean that more matter is being created in the universe, which you seem to imply. This would violate the Law of Conservation of Matter. The existing matter in the universe is simply expanding outwards (though expanding into what is unknown).

God isn’t necessarily creating more matter in the universe (though He certainly can, and has). If you mean “Creation” as the event by which our universe came into being through the creative action of God, then Creation has ended. If God created the universe from the beginning and “He saw that it was good”, then he has no reason to continue that Creation. If, on the other hand, you mean “Creation” as the introduction of more matter into the universe by the action of God, then yes, “creation” is continuing. However, though God’s Creation of the universe may have stopped, His saving action in the world certainly hasn’t. Salvation History has been happening since the dawn of time and is still occuring.

I’m not sure about Church teaching on this matter, but I believe the Church teaches that Creation took place as a discrete event, but that Salvation History is ongoing.

15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did this on the sabbath. 17* But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working still, and I am working.”

Judaism teaches not that there is a continuous physical creation but rather a continuous spiritual creation, and this spiritual creation is a partnership between G-d and mankind since the latter, through their moral acts of kindness and charity, are continuously repairing the world which G-d has created partially incomplete.

Hi Holly,

God’s creative act is like a power station that creates electricity; if the power station stops, the electricity disappears; if God stops “creating”, all things fall into nothingness.

Or in modern English: *
For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

Why do you think the universe is expanding?

Just because scientists talk rubbish all day long, it doesn’t mean you have to believe it.

Why would you think that God would slowly expand the universe everyday?

What did they measure it with?

Did you know that contrary to pubic opinion the Church is very pro science, and many of the famous scientific discoveries were made by Roman Catholics?

Just because fundamentalist literalists talk nonsense all day long it doesn’t mean you have to believe them.

Here’s a list of Catholic scientific thinkers throughout the ages: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_thinkers_in_science

To deny scientific thought is to deny a source of wonder and truth that atheism seeks to co-opt for itself.

Science can ONLY prove the existence of God, but for Catholics to deny science denies this source of truth which is given by God - which is in fact the ground of our corporal being, since all science does is describe and explain that which is created by God.

“Why do you think the universe is expanding?”

Does it matter either way?

It’s hardly rubbish. It’s a pretty basic idea, based on something which you have probably experienced yourself.

It’s like a train whistle that has a higher pitch when the train is coming toward you and then when the train passes, the pitch of the horn gets lower. The pitch of the sound, or the frequency of the sound waves, can be used to measure the relative direction with which the train is moving (toward or away) and how fast.

The same is true of light from stars and galaxies. We can measure the relative speed and direction of all the stars and galaxies which are visible to us, and they all seem to be moving out from a very definite center point.

The basic idea is called the “Doppler effect” and I remember learning it and doing experiments in it in 8th or 9th grade.

The existence of the Doppler effect and the existence of God are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the existence of the Doppler effect depends on the existence of God, and was created by God. .
