Has EWTN begin the new Translation of the Missal?

I didn’t hear the mass. They have used a lot of Latin for a long time, and often (maybe always) use the First Eucharistic Prayer (Roman Canon), which sounds a little grander than the other Eucharistic Prayers.

If they did this part in English, when the priest said “the Lord be with you” did the people respond “and also with you” or “and with your spirit”?

I cannot remember.

From the July 13, 2011 video of the first half of Mass on EWTN, one cannot tell. They simply aren’t using the translation, but say the verse and response in Latin. 🙂

I watched a replay of the mass on video. I wanted to see what you folks were talking about. You’re not going to believe this. I rolled over laughing when I saw it.

The mass of that day was taken from the Roman Missal. Normally, a mass celebrated at a Franciscan house or at a parish run by Franciscans does not come from the Roman Missal, but from the Franciscans Missal. Franciscans can use either missal.

I sat there and thought about why they would be using the Roman missal, since they have always used the Franciscan missal and lectionary. Then it struck me after a second viewing of the video. They had several visiting priests concelebrating who probably don’t know how to use the Franciscan missal.

Fr.Wade and Fr. Mitch know how to use it and they do so. But they have been around a long time.

You folks are so used to the Franciscan Form, that you did not recognize the Roman Form when it suddenlty popped up in Latin.

Everyone does know that the Franciscan form is slightly different from the Roman form, right?

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

DOH!
:rotfl:

-Tim-
My sentiments exactly! :rotfl: with you

I must confess that I did ask myself, what’s wrong with this mass? Only once. Then it hit me.

Ahhh? The is the OF form the Roman Missal, with the Latin instead of the Franciscan Missal. :doh2:

Fraternally,

Br. Jay, OSF 🙂

I’ve never actually watched Mass on EWTN, at least not enough to discern a difference between the two, uh, what are the differences? 😊

They are rather subtle. Off the top of my head (I don’t have the two missals in front of me).
  1. No communion rail in Franciscan sanctuaries, so as not to set the priest off from his other brothers who may not be priests.
  2. No Gregorian chant (usually we use whatever music is available, from classic to contemporary as long as it’s appropriate). However, after Vatican II, Gregorian chant was allowed, as long as the local house voted to use it. But it is highly discouraged by St. Francis.
  3. If it’s a conventual mass, only one priest can celebrate. The others must attend.
  4. The liturgical calendar is different.
  5. The collects are slightly different.
  6. Some Franciscan saints are mentioned in the anaphora.
  7. The wording of some of the prayers used during the mass is taken from the old Seraphic Missal.
  8. There is no kiss of peace, even between the clerics on the altar. The prayer leading to the kiss of peace is not said.
  9. The friars have never allowed a schola, because Francis banned them.
Then there are little things that are done on certain Franciscan holy days that the Church does not celebrate, such as the Transitus of St. Francis on Oct 3.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
