Has God ever (pleasantly) surprised you?

Many times it seems the way God responds to your prayer, for example if you need to get out of a bad situation, is typically predictable (I.e He wants you to continue to suffer…and so sometimes it seems never ending)

I am interested in hearing any experiences where God has answered your prayer in a way that was far above your expectations. Something you thought was humanly impossible given your circumstances, but God intervened for you. Maybe in doing so, you will be giving glory and due thanks to God for blessing you.

I have heard that Jesus is very generous. I hope that others stories will give hope to those in hopeless situations

… I have a few to share but I’ll post when I decide which one~

Mary.

Yes, I have been pleasantly surprised. Usually when I really beg God for something, not much happens in an obvious way. One day I had broken up with my boyfriend (who I loved and wanted to marry) because he refused to take any interest in the faith. It’s a long story, but I decided that the father of my children is going to have to help me raise holy kids because ain’t no way I can do that without backup.

So anyway, there I was in mass heartbroken and in tears feeling like my whole blinkin’ chest had been ripped out. I don’t remember a word of the readings or homily because I couldn’t pay attention due to the pain, and I begged God to make it stop. I sat there right after Communion and said, “God, I did this out of love for you. Please make it stop hurting or I won’t have the strength not to undo it.” By the end of Mass I was able to walk out of church dry-eyed and smiling.

I’m not going to lie and say it was all sunshine and roses of ease after that, but God gave me time to heal and time to gather my strength. I was able to stay strong, and I gave my ex several opportunities to join me in the faith. He has to this day resolutely refused to make any move towards God, and I have not spoken to him in some time (though I still pray for him). I’ve been through a lot of little hells recently, but that one was proof to me that God really won’t break a bruised reed per se.

To be honest, I sometimes don’t like God much. He can be heavy handed at times.

But there was one particular occasion when He gave me a real lift.

I became a Christian in the “real” sense in late 1982. I was 28 at that time. It was also pretty close to the lowest point of my life - no job, going through a divorce, losing the house, very little money, depressed, and not long before I’d been so itchy from stress that i suppose it was almost like shingles, confidence at rock bottom and so on.

But things picked up.

Hoiwever about a year later I was at what we call a “beach mission” at Christmas 1983 run by a group called Scripture Union. Link refers.

suqld.org.au/camps

It’s a Protestant outfit, and not Catholic, but I was Protestant back then (Presbyterian).

Actually we weren’t at a beach, but at a place called Forest Glen Caravan Park just south of Nambour, some miles inland from the beach, although it had a swimming pool.

I was not in a good mood though. I was still a new Christian, had recently been chewed out by the boss, and was feeling quite out of my depth in this SU outfit. I’d had very little experience relating to kids, didn’t have much confidence, and felt rather strange. I was also a bit older than most of the other young people there, most of them university students or similar. With hindsight I was probably trying to please too many people, and wear too many hats I had no experience in wearing.

So I was in a frustrated and cranky frame of mind. The house had been sold, the divorce finalised, and I was wondering what the hell had gone so wrong since I left school a decade or so before?

And I was also thinking “How do I know all this (Christian) stuff is real, and not just a psychological prop?”

It was the custom of the camp to have a Bible study meeting each afternoon at around 3pm. This was for the leaders only, of whom I was supposed to be one.

We did this under a large marquis, with the sides rolled up, as it was quite hot, being the middle of summer here, and it gets very humid in our sub-tropical climate. It was rather soporific, and I found it a bit difficult to maintain attention, as we sat around the main camp leader in a circle of chairs and bench seats.

But as he read from one of the OT books, he quoted God’s words to Samuel about King David “… a man after my own heart…”. Precisely as he said this, this “double whammy” hit me - it was like a breath going right through you in waves from head to foot, very pronounced, very clear and most certainly not from me. It went on for a good fifteen to twenty seconds.

I nearly jumped out of my seat. I realised I’d just been contacted, loud and clear! My next reaction was to look at everyone else to see what they were making of it, but they weren’t taking the least bit of notice, but simply continuing to listen to the speaker, for the simple reason it hadn’t happened to them.

So … from that time on, I knew God existed, and that I was on the right track, and it was not just a psychological prop. And my mood lightened considerably.

I mentioned this to my own pastor when the camp was over, and his comment was “I think the Lord just wanted to encourage you. He knew you’d been through a difficult time, and He decided to give you a bit of a boost.”

As it turned out, I had two more of these “double whammies” over the next few months, and each occasion they highlighted a specific phrase being spoken by my pastor in two of his sermons. And they haven’t happened since.

But the point is, that God “answered your (cranky) prayer in a way that was far above (my) expectations.” And since then, I’ve never been able to disbelieve in God.

Even if I don’t always like Him. He’s there all right, and hard-line atheists are so far from the truth its not funny.

Yes, God has surprised me. I still try to wrap my mind around the way He works in my life. I am so blessed-born into a Catholic family, have not wanted for anything, happiness, loving parents, siblings, faithful husband, education, a comfortable life–YIKES it actually scares me to type that. But He called me closer to Him and got my attention. I have been married for 12 years and my husband and I have been infertile all 12 years. Nothing about infertility makes sense without knowing and loving God. I feel like lots of little pleasant things happen, especially with the Blessed Mother–who will show up as a true Mother when we call out to her–that console me and remind me that this is the journey, we’re all traveling together and the goal is to be forever in heaven beholding Him with all the angels and saints.

A quick story a tangible level: My husband and I were bumped from an international flight. The flight was full and they told us to go home. Others were bumped too and left. We sat down in the lobby of the airport and said the rosary together while we were deciding if we should drive back home, stay at the airport hotel or what. We finished the rosary and JUST then, they called our names over the loud speaker to come to the ticket counter and they put us back on the flight AND then bumped us up to first class. THANK YOU Mary;)

Yes, several times…

the best one was years ago we were in a bowling league, and we {meaning I } had never won anything, in sports or any other competition… well this time I actually prayed for help, and we won in the most amazing fashion… we ended up in a three way tie for first… we won two playoffs and the league championship… it could not have been more dramatic or special, I even bowled a couple of my best sets at the time…we have never won another year since but that one will last a lifetime.

the other most memorable occasion was I was dating my eventual bride to be early in our relationship… I was asked to join a softball game… I had not played in several years and was quite rusty… I was up to bat and I looked really terrible on the first two swings on balls way out of the strike zone. I settled in and was determined not to swing at anything not close enough to hit and after about a dozen pitches was way off the plate, one finally came over the center and I smacked a hard line drive just past the third baseman’s reach. I just about floated all the way to first base.

I am not all that athletic but two times in my life, God came through in a big way.

On the non sports side, meeting my wife, and the birth of my three kids rank way up there as well. Especially our first when we were just about to give up and go for adopting.

All the time. It doesn’t feel that way most of the time, but I’ve had an incredibly lucky life for the most part and I never asked for much either, so I don’t think I can ever begrudge God for being heavy-handed.
