Has protestantism really changed so much since I left it?

Okay, so I only left about 2 years ago so probably not, but still…

I recently signed up for an allencompassing christian forum. I thought it’d be nice to dialogue with some protestants about various topics. So I found this really big christian forum site and signed up. I have yet to make a single post…

When I was protestant, I was pentecostal. We were very close with the non-denominationals, baptists (both branches in our valley), episcopals, and methodists in the area. The only church we were at odds with was (shocker!) the catholic church down the road. Anyway, we had our disagreements, but our big HUGE agreement was the evil of abortion. We held rallies, prayer vigils, etc.

When I went on this forum easily over 50% of the people talking about abortion were pro-choice!!! And I don’t mean the “meh, abortion is bad but it’s her choice” kind of prochoice, I am talking about the “I escort women in to the clinics to get them away from the harassing public, abortion should be legal on demand UP TO BIRTH, and abortion is a GOOD thing for women to do so I am in fact ‘pro abortion’” kind of prochoice…

I am so utterly floored by this. What’s more is it wasn’t just a few, it was A LOT. The pro abortion (and I use that at THEIR request, by the way). I am just…floored. Catholics seemed to be the only prolifers there. Protestants: Is this common? Really?

I can’t speak for every non-Catholic denomination, but I can assure you that the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod remains unequivocally pro-life.

When you were protestant, you were probably a member of a conservative, evangelical church. The liberal protestant denominations that are willing to compromise biblical truth to conform to the age have always been around, you’re probably just now getting a lot of exposure to them.
Also, I do think that things are, in general, getting worse as far as the average American Christian’s fidelity to truth is concerned.

The pro-life movement is gaining ground, in reality. It’s bigger and mroe widespread than ever since 1995 at the latest. You just found a liberal Protestant forum. Abortion may not be the only issue that will surprise you. My first encounters with liberal Protestantism where I live were eye-openers. I was a very new Christian, liberal politically still (several years ago now). They thought it was wrong to evangelize. They thought it was weird to thank God for supernatural healings, and they thought whatever people believe is fine as long as they are open to ading other religious practices to it to be polite. To some of them it was like a bad smell to be reminded that in fact if two people make mutually exclusive truth claims, at least one is mistaken. The word “sin” just didn’t come up.

Yes, I even encountered this in my conservative protestant background. It’s one of the things that led me to catholicism. I just could agree with the idea that two people can make two mutually exclusive claims about Christ, yet affirm that they are BOTH right.

But back on topic, I am glad to hear it’s gaining ground. That’s awesome.

This was a very large forum, so either conservative christians are staying away, or just not getting involved with these people. I am NOT joking when I say that they were thanking God for women having abortions…I felt absolutely sick.

I say this with fear and trembling, and please keep in mind that I was raised evangelical Protestant.

I think a lot of evangelicals are discouraged with the pro-life issue because their prayers aren’t answe

Social liberals have always been a part of the chruch. After the President Bush election victories, which they blame on the conservative church (check out Ohio and Pastor Rod Parsley’s attributed influence in 2004) they upped their game and now fight on all levels. Including evangelizing liberal politics and calling it the Gospel. For example last Christmas I got many Christmas cards from gays with inserted letters with the gospel of same sex unions. Or the Speaker of the US House of Representatives saying that there is no Biblical injunction against same sex marriage and some abortions.

Notice how President Obama just happened to find a pro-choice and pro same sex marriage church when he was still just a community, (should read) political activist.
