I heard from somebody that they said the church spoke against it a couple years ago.

Well, it’s a form of “entertainment” that involves:
  • Mindless violence
  • Drug abuse - cannabis, steroids, painkillers
  • No clear portrayal of “right” and “wrong”
  • Objectification of women (skimpy costumes, “lingerie” matches, “stripping” matches)
  • Crude and vulgar humour
  • Blasphemy (a few years ago, they did an angle that was basically anti-Christian, in which the head of the organization claimed to have formed “his own religion” and to perform "miracle healings)
  • Trivialization of serious issues, such as alcoholism and suicide
  • Katie Vick (if you’re a wrestling fan or follower, nothing more needs to be said!) 😃
Hard to see how the Church would approve. 🤷

Sadly, doesn’t every sport do this. I don’t think the church is against the sport aspect, but sadly a lot of things in sports revolve around what you mentioned. A lot of these same things happen in the NFL or NBA or MLB or the olympics, but the sport itself isn’t bad. I’m sure the Church or God doesn’t have a problem with Athletics, but it can lead to a sinful lifestyle. Certainly Pro Wrestling has lead a lot of people to a bad lifestyle, but it can be okay in some instances

and when I mean pro wrestling I mean like the old fashion stuff like Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant…not the attitude era with guys where the fan favorites were alcohics, pimps, porn stars, etc…wrestling today is going more back to family…heck it’s even on the saturday morning cartoon schedule now (not saying that automatically makes its acceptable)

and I was wondering if the church ever did saying anything against it, not what people might think they would say

I didn’t mean my last sentence in a rude way either, so please forgive me if it comes off like that.

LOL, took the words out of my mouth.

Good points. 👍

However, these problems are a lot more acute in WWE (at least the WWE I was familiar with, in the years 1993-2002), because inappropriate material (adultery, fornication, prostitution) is often incorporated into storylines.

Let’s not forget their flirtations with the occult, either (“Ministry of Darkness”, etc.)

The 1980s stuff is fairly harmless. Sure, there was the odd skimpy costume, or a character like Jake the Snake who said he wanted to be “worse than the devil”, but most of it was just cartoonish entertainment, good guys vs bad guys, heroes vs villains, etc. It was only around 1996-7 that things truly went wrong.

My ex-husband was a pro-wrestler in the late 80’s early 90’s. He said that one of the reasons he quit was b/c he didn’t want to take steroids.

I know, but as for the church making a stand on it, I doubt its on their radar. Sure there are bad things, but its not like the church makes a statement in the Catechism about pro wrestling.

I know it can seem like it sometimes, but the Catholic Church doesn’t have an official statement on everything. 😛 As far as I know, the Church has never said anything at all about the WWE.

It’s basically a soap opera for guys. It’s just as unrealistic, melodramatic, and protracted, only they solve disputes with elbow smashes and folding chairs. 😃

…to the people who bring up steroids…

The WWE has really started cracking down on steroid abuse. They recently suspended one of their biggest stars, Randy Orton, a couple months ago fo “violating the wellness policy”…

…and the WWE Champion right now is CM Punk. He claims to be “straight edge”, which means he doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs (including steroids)

…Most of the wrestlers are pretty modestly sized now then they used to be. CM Punk is 6’2 218lb…thats pretty modest for a pro wrestler… This is because steroids have been taken out of the mix.
