Has the #MeToo movement become a witch-hunt to a significant degree?

Assuming yall are not exhausted as I am…which is extraordinary.
Oh, trust me, we are. This thread is proof that no matter how much suffering someone has undergone, there will be people who insist on dismissing them.

Could you point out where I called you a feminist? I honestly don’t recall doing that.
Are you slow or are you just having fun here? I didn’t say you have called me a feminist. Go look at the definition of ‘prediction’. It’s a long word but you’ll manage 😂

Yeah, it’s pretty ridiculous. It’s one thing to whine about the women who would hypothetically wrong them. But another thing to accuse a poster of lying especially when she have been very open about her experiences way before threads like this have popped up.

Edit to add: surprisingly I’m not that bothered now. My heart is with the victims and that’s all that matters in this topic. The rest have to answer to God eventually. This topic has taken many unnecessary turns…which is kind of funny now that you look at the first few posts.

There’s some pretty thorough studies that women who do that are seen as less professional by male bosses than women who dress in traditionally feminine ways. The pant suit is still seen as a stereotype of the ugly feminist. Unfortunately there’s an association that being feminine means prizing the aesthetic over the functional, to the point where a woman who does the other way around is either sloppy or uncomfortably masculine.
So are you saying that the reason women dress in a manner that mimics ripe fruit is because their male bosses prefer that they do?

Not because women prefer to or choose to, but because their bosses do?

Let that sink in for a minute.

Perhaps women do still need to be liberated – but not from their male bosses, from themselves.
I’ve also mentioned another reason I wear makeup - it makes me look older. My natural looks tend to a decade younger than I actually am, and that can be a hindrance in certain jobs where you need people to accept that you know what you’re doing. Since I’m not actually fresh out of high school, I don’t see any deception in trying to look like I’m not fresh out of high school.
There is no deception in living according to the deception that judging merely by appearances is a sound method of making judgements?

We can, then, safely dispense with the principle that individuals should actually know what they are doing, provided that they can deceive others into thinking that by merely appearing to know what they are doing?

And the other thing this thread demonstrates is that people who are sexually assaulted have been right to expect blame and shame if they speak up.

It all goes to show the sophistry of “Why didn’t she report immediately?”

Oh, I get it! You were predicting that I would call you a feminist, and so on that basis you have grounds for decrying me having called you a feminist?

How is this ability of yours to make predictions in any way distinguishable from cognitive bias or prejudice?

Is this a common modus operandi among women, or just you?

If common, then perhaps we need to look into how this phenomenon might be a driving factor behind the #MeToo movement – I.e., perhaps many women are “predicting” or anticipating rape or harassment and so are calling men out, not for what men actually do, but for behaviours predicted or anticipated by women.

Here is your quote:
One of the predictable responses would be you calling me a feminist even though I have said that I don’t support the current wave of feminism, but it would not matter to you because it seems like people label each other that to get a rise out of someone?
As a student of psychology, you might want to analyze your words carefully.

In light of this discussion, my question would be, “Why didn’t she report before it happened, or even before it happens in anticipation that it will happen?”

I mean, given the outstanding precognition abilities of women and all.

I try not to wear anything that makes me look like a ripe apple, mango, pear, pomegranate or papaya.

Unfortunately, I already have a ripe ghord shape, so other than Halloween, it’s hard to find something that is even remotely flattering.

Even so, and even in my 70s, I’ve been “hit on”.

Reading this thread has been “interesting”, in the Chinese sense of the word.

You left out banana. People will start talking! 😉

If we’re including peeled banana, that’s me. I got the good old irish complexion.

But what I don’t understand is why I somehow owe you my true face or whatever. Deception would imply I’m trying to make you think that my real face or whatever. If I’m putting on makeup for work, you see a human female attired for work. What I look like after getting out of the shower isn’t any real concern of men I’m working with. It’s not meant to attract them.

Most guys I know wear suits and ties because their bosses want them to too. Sure, maybe in an ideal world we could all wear whatever we liked to work and no one would judge us for it, but last I checked none of us live there. (And if you think a well-fitted suit doesn’t make a man’s body shape look different than jeans and a t-shirt, I would encourage you to look at suits again. Plenty of ladies have noticed the difference ☺️ .)

Plenty of young-looking men grow facial hair because it makes them look older.

Right.

A person with a basic familiarity with the female sex is aware of such facts as: a) women’s skin doesn’t naturally look like plastic b) eyelashes aren’t typically half an inch long c) women do not naturally have purple, grey or green eyelids d) bright fuchsia, purple or teal is not a hair color that occurs in nature e) women’s bosoms are not naturally large, round, and buoyant e) women are not born tattooed and f) long-haired women do not wake up with shampoo model hair.

I’m not sure I see the deception. If a woman has a bare face, I can see that, if she has light makeup, I can see that, and if she has on heavy makeup, everybody can see that.

Right.

A good suit is like Spanx for men.

And I went bald at twenty something so I could look older. 😏

And plenty of men wear toupees because it makes them look younger.

So apparently there are rules and there are exceptions. Or maybe there aren’t rules and people, in general, do what they do for a number of often conflicting reasons or motives.

Which should blow apart the #MeToo narrative, but it won’t because people find false security in numbers and groups. Look up Pareto Distribution to get a sense of what is far more likely at play in terms of numbers of offenders.

You realize that DarkLight posted on more or less that exact idea earlier in the thread at least a couple times?

I know that’s true in my own family, because one of my older relatives molested at least 5 girls.

Consider the difference between Chris Christie reclining in beach attire versus Chris Christie at the podium in a nice suit.

Edited to add:

Quite a few of the people accused by MeToo have way worse ratios than 80/20.

But part of what MeToo is going for is to keep bystanders for making excuses for and continuing to cover up for hyper-predators.

If the Pareto Distribution is true, people such as Harrystotle should be more willing to believe multiple accusers of a single individual.

Right - one of the main points of #metoo is to remove social shelters from repeat offenders. Offenders tend to specifically target vulnerable women, and situations where the victim is likely to be disbelieved or told she’s overreacting are included in that. Especially as in at least some of these cases it’s turning out to have been an open secret within the industry how these men acted.

For an easy example, the one Walmart I worked at had one man known for sexual harassment. Every woman there who had worked with him that I talked to had a story of being harassed. That’s a lot of women for one man - but he never faced any consequences other than an occasional talking to. Now he wasn’t a rapist, but I expect we have the same problem. Rapists keep raping because the don’t think they will face consequences.
