We were told at a recent Liturgy Committee meeting that the new GIRM could not be studied because it referred to the new translation and until the GIRM is bound in the sacramentary with the new translation it is not in force. Is this correct for Australia?

Dear yinekka,

The new GIRM has been around for few years now and is certainly in force—even in Australia. This is from the US Catholic Bishops website:

“On Holy Thursday, 2000, Pope John Paul II approved the revised Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani, popularly known as the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. The present revision replaces the 1975 edition of the Institutio Generalis and is now available in Latin from the Vatican Press and in an English language study edition from the NCCB Secretariat for the Liturgy.”
