Has there ever been a female Pope?

My young son was told by a family member that there was a female pope. He was told that “she” was a priest, cardinal and then pope. I recall something about “Pope Joan”. It is my understanding that there has never been a female pope. Please shed light on this so I can instruct my son appropriately. How do I address this with the family that is sharing this information?
