Has your guardian angel told you his name?

I think we have two distinct questions here. #1—Do angels have names (and if so, is it okay to try and find out what its name is?) and #2, Should we give our angel a name?

Angels have names, whether it’s because humans have attributed names to specific characteristcs, occupations, or behavior (such as Raphael which means “God has healed”), or because they have revealed their “names,” based on their functions, to us.

The word “angel” denotes a function rather than a nature. The Dictionary of Angels is an invaluable and enjoyable tool.

So much drippy sentimentalism in one thread. You each have a guardian angel. I don’t think anybody is trying to cast doubt on that.

BUT we have been warned by the church not to “name” our Angels. Yet so many here are content to share whatever silly name they can think of. (Sorry.) We have heard examples of people being lead to demonic names. Even the name “Lucifer” means something positive, but that angel itself has chosen a bad path despite its name.

My purpose in posting to encourage you each to read what the church is saying (provided variously earlier in the thread) and ask yourself whether your own reason is more valid than the Church. Really. I really think you should all be attaching more gravity (graveness) to this issue. You meant well but please just listen, you could be evoking a fallen angel.

You’ll probably want to throw rotten tomatoes at me but here goes. I do not think we should ask our guardian angel for a name, it’s too easy to get attached to a familiar spirit (unclean) in my opinion. I use to channel the entity ‘Seth’ under a new age guru and other spirits as well so I’m very cautious about this type of thing so please be careful, and I say this from the bottom of my heart because I love all my catholic brothers and sisters immensely

I understand perfectly. I was raised in a situation involving the occult and I had a Guardian but he was of the Fallen kind. As a practicing witch I knew the names of many ‘Spirit Guides’. I still fight against these forces everyday–they were so much a part of my life for most of my life. I have shared the name of the Guardian (demon) with my priest and he has used it in prayers to help defeat him. So I am glad I know his name. But I would be very cautious if another angel told me a name I did not recognize right off, since there is power in knowing their names. I can’t see them giving over that power to just anyone, trust would be involved. I am jealous of those who have such a good relationship with angels!

So for me, I do not know my Guardian Angel’s name yet, until I can develop a sure discernment, and they trust me with it. But I do know they are there and I do know that Michael and Gabriel have both stepped in on my behalf on occasion. I read in a book called Angels (approved by the CC) that the Archangels are Guardians for special people like Popes, and other special people may have more than one Guardian Angel too. I do not presume I am so special.

I don’t really know my Guardian Angel, but I’d really, really like to.I don’t know if its a boy or a girl, I don’t know weather its young or grownup, I don’t know if its a relation or someone I never heard of, and I dont have the faintest idea what its name is.I want to be friends with my Angel, though, and I am very grateful that I have it as a heavenly Guardian, and I am going to start talking to it more often.I know almost nothing about Angels…
All I know is that they’re special creatures God created to be with him in heaven.I think I’ll have to learn more about them.
